Everyone will have a reason why their cam is the best. In the end, get a custom cam from PatG or Ed Curtis.

I have a PatG/EPS 230/238 and trapped 116.3 with a stock intake manifold. That's some serious trap for only cam/exhaust and full weight. It's a DD also.

It's all in the tune. Generally speaking, bigger cam + good tune is more driveable than smaller cam + bad tune. Smaller cam + good tune makes more power than bigger cam + bad tune.

The differences between Treys06GTO's tunes on a VRX5 cam were night and day. The tune from a local shop was terrible. Surging and snarling constantly like someone crapped in the gas tank, and the drivability was pretty minimal. After a proper tune from Chuck Anders, it really was a night and day difference. Keep this in mind, OP. Great tune = great time

I honestly love the vrx5. At first I hated it when I had the local shop here tune it. Surging, tip in was so off and I have 46lb injectors and they put in hpt that I had 52lb injectors everything was off. I then contacted Ed and advanced inductions. Ed said to go with his cam but who wouldn't. Well Phil from advanced inductions said it was in my tune and even though I didn't have one of his cam ( have there heads though) he said there was no point in getting another cam because it was not worth what minimal gain I would get if any. Vrx5 is already aggressive enough and was enough. I then had chuck anders yes the guy this forum has something against fly out here to Hawaii and re tuned my car and damn what a difference! No more cam surge and was fun to drive again! Like stated before its really in the tune. I was cruising at 50-55 on the highway with no bucking or surging! My vote still stays with the x5

coming from a xer273hr114 owner, id go bigger.

as a complete basiclly truck cam only car (only have a k&n cai, and i dont count it as a mod), and the cam and valve springs i made 344/331 through a 6spd. once i put headers and catless mids on it made 368/355.
while it picked up roughly 40whp, i would say that it was all above 2500, anything below 2500 its a dog, espeically since i sold the headers and am now cam only plus mufflers.

personally i wish i went with a streetsweeper cam, or atleast a 228/232, and not so much of a spread in duration, oh and on a much much tighter LSA, like a 108-109.. but thats just me.

maybe the next cam.

aaron

edit..

when i was bone stock i went 100.48 mph. as a personal best.. cam only it went 106.6 mph. so a big 6mph gain. this was on an 04 BTW.
the previous owner of the cam IIRC made 380whp with headers, and bolt ons.

The camshafts mentioned by the OP are Comp XER lobes and old school thinking. Not the best choices for power nor are they easy on valve springs. If I posting their downfalls in every "what if" thread, it would get extremely boring so I keep it short and sweet.

There are countless times where the swap from a shelf grind to something more current shows better "average" power as well as longer valvetrain life. I'm also not limited to the typical Comp master lobes like so many others use. I have dealers all over the world that continue to show me their results with the stuff I provide and their constant return orders show something is right. Can't argue with facts.

Actually, less than $50 difference between catalog grinds and my customs since I include the shipping.

Merry Christmas SnS...

ok,how do I get ahold of Ed?

In my last GTO I had the comp cam you are looking into but this time I will be giving ED a call. I thought it pulled great up top but I wanted better low end performance.

Same here !! I loved the rumble... See numbers below. Great for the street or track, But it beatup the valves hard and finally "I believe" lead to a lifter break which lead to a hole in the block, a cam that was shreaded, and a complete waste of a good motor..... Now replacing block w/ an LS7. my 2 cents

Good Luck!
