If you look closely at the final shots, the rear wheels aren't even touching the ground!!! It was almost flying, if there was no bumper the car would have been flying, YIKES!!!! That's why the car never came back down until it slowed. I'm very sure the driver had his foot off the accelerator and on the brakes, but no wheel was touching the ground, so it didn't make a difference. That was defiantly a shorts changing situation, ewwwww............

Thanks for sharing AL!!!

Actually the rotational force of the wheels stopping in the air would bring the front down. It's a common technique used among motorsports that when you start pointing too far back while you're in the air, you hit the brakes to tilt the front down, and when you're pointing too far down, you hit the gas.

It's got a much more prominent outcome with dirt bikes due to their light weight versus cars. I will also say that the effects of utilizing the brakes to tilt forwards will be much more pronounced than hitting the gas to tilt back due to the abrupt stop of the wheels having a much stronger effect.

Holy chit man that was an excellent vid that explained it all!!! With just this explanation above I was going to ask you to explain how putting your brakes on would help, when no wheels are touching the ground. But, you know there would be a, but, lol, if you hit the brakes in a car, all 4 wheels would stop. The vid said do not use your front brakes, so how would that help in a car? No difference because it has 4 wheels oppose to 2?

Sorry to be so "stupid" in this area, but I found this to be very interesting!!

Thanks Dizzy,
ROK

No worries brother! The reason you don't use front brakes on a dirt bike is because you don't want to potentially land with a locked up front wheel. That would end... probably not so well, and you'd flip end over end as soon as you landed. On a car with all four locking up it's going to make the front pitch forward a lot faster, while also bringing the rear up at the same time. Given enough space he could have ended up with the front facing down and the back in the air. Granted like I said earlier, it's got a much more profound effect on a dirt bike in the air vs a drag car due to the weight, but the theory still holds true.

Had he hit his brakes as soon as he left terra firma he'd have come slamming back down pretty hard and potentially caused a lot of damage to the engine/body or spun out of control and wrecked it, which I'm guessing is why he just let off the gas as it'd have a similar but not nearly as drastic effect as hitting the brakes. Letting off would have helped stop him from tilting further back, and would have let gravity bring the front back down, where as hitting the brakes would have added more rotational/centrifugal force to aid in the impact coming down.

Ahhhhhhh, I get it now!! Wow, some things you never think of explained to me in a way that I understood it. That doesn't happen all that often, lol, lol, THANKS!!!!

I guess Geomatics covers a wide range of applications. And things as small as applying the brakes to bring the front end down on a motor vehicle.

Thanks man for your perfect explanation and Video!!!!!! I defiantly learned something new!!

Well the best way I can think of it is: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred. If the energy from a rotating wheel is suddenly stopped, that rotational energy has gotta go somewhere!

Hitting the brakes at that point would be ill advised. It'd bring the front crashing down even harder. Best to just let off the gas and let gravity do it's thing.

Well hot damn, I'm in a thread full of genius' lol. That was some very well explained info right there. I knew that you could do that on a dirtbike from back in my bike riding days, but never really gave it a thought when it came to cars. Very interesting. Thanks for the info and great explanation.
