Newest Tint Law in New York

What's everyone doing with the new refined tint law in New York. Does this state have any idea how many people are going to lose their jobs?

Wow, at 70% it's not even worth tinting.

Wow that seams a Little ridiculous. I live in seattle and I picked up a
SUV from the police auction. It was a undercover rig and the windshield was tinted. I felt like leaving it and keep the paperwork in the car and say it was your car I just left it.

That would be hilarious. However, they would quickly remind you how they don't have to follow the laws, and you do. Well they do have to follow the laws, they just do what they want.

Spoke to the inspection station already and was told that no new inspection sticker will be issued on any car with tint; no exceptions.

It looks a lot like the tint laws up here in NH.

I don't think the allowed amount of tint has changed, it's just being checked as part of the annual NYS inspection.

Yep, that's pretty much the accepted legal level in most states. NY just so happens to now be checking it annually instead of allowing law enforcement to ticket you for it at their discretion.

I was told by a NYS trooper that any tint on a driver or passenger door is technically illegal because the factory glass always has some sort of tint already in it. The tint shops never factor that in when they sell you the "legal" shit. If they could see you in the car you were pretty much ok. Unless you're being a dick then that's another ticket to get tacked onto what you were originally pulled over for. Now that the NYS inspection is looking for it things are different. My cousin had to peel his off last week or he wouldn't get a sticker.

Not at all. Scores of tint removal shops will spring up all over the empire state.

Lose jobs? Yeah. Possibly the little guys only doing automotive window tinting. Shame on them for putting all of their eggs into that basket knowing tint is widely illegal.

The vast majority of shops like this, at least in this area, don't just do automotive window tint though. They also do commercial tinting, clear bra's, graphics, wraps, pinstriping etc.

Well finally having mine done this week. Guy said he was going to steam clean it off. Just worried about too much water in the interior if that is a factor using steam. I;m not going have the guy tint the windows for a 70% tint, not worth it at all in my opinion. I guess eventually, all these guys that just do tinting will lose their jobs. I guess it's time to further your experience some.

There are some absurdly-expensive cars that have electrically-activated tint.
Seems to be the only way to circumvent these laws.
At least we can tint the back glass, as long as there are two side mirrors.

That's what I did. Had the tint taken off the front windows and left the rear alone. Took about a day to get used to the new look and back to normal again

sMy son works for a tint company and it has greatly impacted their business. The law is not new it is just that it will now be part of the New York State Inspection where as before it was enforced through traffic stops. The only tint that is allowed on a car is the back window but only if you have two outside mirrors and it can be as dark as you want. You can also place tint on the top 6 inches of the windshield. No tint is allowed on the side windows of a car even if they are fixed windows and do not go up and down. All side windows must allow 70% light transmission.

I'm not removing my tint. I'm not sure about the rest of the state, but there are a few businesses out here in the Albany area that are running specials. Something like, pay $99 and we'll remove your tint, inspect your car, and then reinstall tint.

But like I said, I'm not removing my tint....I like my 5% all around.

Neat. Typical, "You're a criminal unless we can see every move you make" attitude from up there. I hate these bullshit laws.

It's a bunch of bullshit NYC policies that affect the state as a whole, think NY SAFE Act.

Then there is the 25 MPH law down here in NYC. I do not know if it saves lives, but it certainly is a cash cow. There are three cop SUVs just in this neighborhood devoted to chasing down and ticketing all who drive a mile or two over the limit. Plus radar cameras.

Needs to be replaced anyway. Probably pull it, inspect and install new.
I've received one tint ticket a couple years ago in NY. IIRC it was $175.

Now I'd kinda like this one in my neighborhood. Speed limit is 20mph and the soccer moms routinely do 30-40mph while texting and being distracted by their kids in the backseats.

That isn't much different than Massachusetts laws. In MA they only allow 35% (compared to NY's 30%) and a lot of the reputable shops won't do the full 35% because they figure in the factory tints, so they will tell you they will do a 20% on top of the factory tints.

I have no problem with the 35% laws here.

We need someone to invent tint that is like transition lenses. Shine the flash light on it when the po-po comes up and it goes clear!

I removed my windows before the inspection and then put them back in after my sticker was issued. Windows aren't required to pass inspection. I told the shop guy that I don't need windows because I only drive in the summer. He didn't question it.

The lower the % the darker the film. They would not put 20% on as it is darker than 35%
