For me, it came down to money. I looked through every for sale GTO within a 200 mile radius of here... ALL of the M6 GTO's were at least $4k more than the auto I found. So I got my auto for damn cheap and took those savings and spent some on mods and other necessities!

So big D was being stupid but teejay's "real men drive stick" wasn't ?
Big D's post was actually false since he stated a hard "fact", whereas teejay's post was simply an opinion statement - hard to argue on opinions (not saying I would on his point, though ).

M6's are not as consistent as the A4, so it takes more skill to drive one well. As automatic owners will attest, you let the car launch for you and then can eat a hamburger going down the strip - I *like* being involved with the shifting. And how many M6 owners still have the stock shifter - not many. Our *hydraulics* on the M6 may be a PITA, but the actual T56 manual tranny is a very solid piece - don't confuse the two. GTO's are in some healthy company with the same trans. The on-off thing in my other post was part of playing devil's advocate, since you can see I own an M6. I did not even consider getting an A4 in the GTO. Mainly because there's 2 less gears, no steering wheel mounted controls (i.e. paddles or buttons), and it really is a lot less fun (and dare I even say less manly? ) that driving an M6. That other thread was about the new A6 tranny, not the inferior A4 I would actually have to live with in a GTO.
Overall, A4/M6 is such an age-old argument, it's like Republican/Democrat - you like what you like and value what you value, and rarely is someone going to convince another through argument to switch sides. I see the upside of both, and think that one day we're all going to be driving DSG/twin-clutch-like manu-matics and look back at these days and wonder how we ever did anything with such primitive transmission options.
"The monster is here with rubber to burn,
gas to suck and six gears to turn
With merciless might it teaches a lesson
of displacement and heavy compression
Of rear tire smoke and thundering torque,
and how old muscle formulas still work
As quick as it came the monster is gone,
screaming away as if racing the dawn
And it just might win, that crippling blow
of metal and muscle known as 'GTO'. "
With practice and a decent set of tires, an M6 can be just as quick (if not quicker) than an A4 at the track. Take last Friday for instance....
WichitaGTO: '04/ A4 w/ heads, cam, headers, exhaust, stall, dyno tune (ETMC) and sticky tires vs. me at the track. He jumped about a car off the line, and I beat him on the big end by about a car and 3-4 mph. I don't have much done to my ride yet, and I was on street tires, not DR's. Also, in a a roll race, I can stick right with an auto car that is a full second quicker in the 1/4 than me. I get 17-18 mpg on average, and 24+ on highway trips. I personally enjoy driving an M6 a bunch more than any automatic.
i have an a4 and love it and every car i owned before this one was a standard trans. I loved them just the same. I knew my intentions when i bought this car and got a hell of a deal on it at the same time. Main thing is I wanted a drag car that looked nice in the process. decent sized cam w/ a 3200 stall and some sticky tires and you're in the 11's without even trying hard. That was and still is my goal. I would love to have an m6 sitting next to it in the garage but i'm not quite at that baller status yet. LOL. anyway you need to decide for yourself. I love my auto b/c i am drag racer at heart and consistency is key. M6 is just more difficult to keep consistent. oh well i'll get off my soapbox now. hope ive been of some assistance to you.
I've had 3 different manual trans cars that I raced over my almost 30 years of drag racing. I've also had alot more Autos. The last car I had was a race only car that had a reverse valve body manual shift auto with a transbrake & 31" slicks with nitrous. I used to launch at 4500 & shift at 7000. The car was deadly consistant when I didn't use the n2o. I sold it because I didn't have time to use a race only car very often. I wanted a NICE street car that I could go to the track whenever possible & be able to actually win some rounds or compete in when I had the time to go. When I went GTO shopping, I didn't even consider a M6 car. I work on cars for a living. & have my own shop. I do work on a couple M6 GTO's & I do love driving them once in awhile. But with the expense of clutches & such there is no way I'd own one. Something else I don't think anyone else has said in this post is that M6's are alot harder on the supporting drivetrain parts!
I've driven a friends M6 GTO at the track & the 2 passes I took were faster than any passes he made. So I CAN drive a MANLY car, I've just been there, done that, bought quite a few t-shirts & now have a womans car that runs dead on every pass. Oh, & by the way the big stall converter will be in next week!!!
If I could, I would have one of each. Both have their pros and cons.
Tis' life.
I agree. I love walking through the gears with a stick, but this car is a daily driver. In the stop and go traffic it's just a lot easier to put it in drive and let the car handle the shifting. Yes I know I'm a lazy ass.

I have owned both. If you like to race at the track, by all means, a stalled A4 is the way to go.
If you like rolling highway races, autocross/roadcourse get an M6.
Just a heads up, if you drag race with the m6 you will most likely need to replace the clutch with a good one. Also upgrade the clutch fluid and get a SS bleeder line for the clutch master.

Auto guys will always claim they are faster, get an M6 and learn to drive, you have more powerbands it is will get better gas mileage, and you have the factory yanker...

a4 vs. m6 = drivers race with advantage going to the a4 for being a little easier to drive
when my m6 was bone stock, I raced an a4 GTO at the track with the same mods I have now, and it ran a consistent 13.2x to my consistent 13.4x. Since I got those mods, I raced a bone stock a4 GTO at the track and it ran a consistent 13.4x and I ran a consistent 13.2x.
Actually the last three times I've been to the track, every one of my times have been between 13.19 and 13.39 @ 107-108 with nice easy launches. Oh, this is on my original clutch that I have beat the crap out for 55,000 miles
Comparing modded GTO' is tough because of all the slight differences so it really is a personal choice as to what you want and I personally believe the m6 is much more fun and sitting in traffic is no fun for anyone, just easier to deal with with an a4
Well, I got the converter in along with a cooler. We went to a track rental here in Ohio yesterday. With totally stock suspension, & stock LS2 (just boltons) I ran a 12.23 with a 1.625 60ft time. I kinda doubt that can be had with a M6!!
Maybe someone can post up & prove me wrong.

Coming attractions include Drag bags, cam, real tune, nitrous!!
If you want to win get an A4.
If you want to lose with better gas mileage get an M6.
I don't care what people say. I have only lost to 2 GTOs out of all those I raced. One was a procharger and the other was a TT. A stalled auto will run away from an M6 any day of the week stop or from a roll. Atleast mine does
If you want to win get a stick, if you want crap gas mileage and get your doors blown on 40+ kicks get a auto. I don't care what people say. I have only lost to 1 ZO6 with a maggie. A stalled auto will overheat any day of the week from a stop or a roll. At least the ones in hot GA do...

Get a real cooler & it won't get hot. & Roll racing is for people that can't Launch! Drag Racing includes a Launch!
