HIGH POINT - State police sting targets street-race ring
Not one of us, I hope....
HIGH POINT - A white Nissan 350Z - lowered so the fenders barely cleared the nearly treadless tires - wheeled into a holding lot for confiscated vehicles at 10:55 p.m. Saturday. Ten minutes later, a silver Pontiac GTO rolled in, and a white Honda Civic after that.
Often, illegal street races are minutely choreographed operations involving a pair of "lookout" drivers ahead of and behind the racers, using radar detectors up front to check for police and maintaining a rolling roadblock behind to keep other vehicles from interfering. A pair of drivers start the race already driving alongside one another at low speed - 20 to 30 mph - then use a subtle, agreed-upon signal - flashed lights, a hand gesture, or a tap on the horn - to mark the beginning of the race.
That actually sounds fairly safe...
Also the writer of the article sounds extremely well-informed, I'm wondering if he's done a little racing himself.

Is that a ls2gto.com sticker in the back of the quarter window? Looks like the default place where everyone puts their sticker.
So I guess the NC highway patrol will have a new chase vehicle similar to the ones that say "confiscated from a drug dealer"?
Kind of looks like one.
I saw some more video last night. Not that I'm a fan of street-racing punks, but the local authorities are definitely milking this for the publicity.
They made a point of "searching the car for other contraband material" and had drug dogs sniffing all over the impounded cars. They even had one dog IN the trunk of the silver GTO. Just a giant show for the TV cameras.
a giant show just like they did in Charlotte - especially when they put the blame on Horsepower Addicts (which I am a member of), causing the school to suspend us for 3 months until they determined there wasnt enough evidence to keep us on suspension! Man did that piss me (and the other members) off. We werent involved nor did we have anything that could have linked us to it except the fact that we meet at the same school campus (event though we dont meet during the summer). It just really aggravates me. but as long as they dont start doing that shit, i am fine with the street racing bust. but dont put innocent car clubs to blame without 100% proof.

Must have been a small dog.....
It's all just a show. I don't like street racing either but when nearly everyone has a "not in my backyard" stance to dragstrips what are some hobbyists to do?

I've taken up guns if you noticed....they work great for people that cause you trouble, and while very dangerous, they are more widely accepted than a fast car. What kind of crap is that?
Unofficially: There are lots of areas within large cities, in rural areas and who only knows where area cops just sort of "Let it slide". They are supposed to enforce the law, just like we are supposed to obey the law. We break it and they sometimes allow it, i.e. giving breaks and what-not.
The bummer part of it all is that when some assclowns get out there and do it everywhere. No matter who's around and then there are street racing complaints, even crashes that sometimes kill people. All the publicity that is given to a cause will force Law Enforcement to step up and do their job. The State Statute books are thick and there are laws for more things than most of us would like there to be, but they aren't always enforced. That's where officer descretion comes in. When some trend, like street racing, gets so much publicity there is no choice but to crack down. Fact of the matter is: If you take the risk, you know what you are up against. It sucks for everyone that does it old school, but there are so many cell phones and so much more traffic than there was before, it's going to have to go to the TRACK.
I occasionally get into it on an open road. I have, in the past, made a few kills in my S/C car. Don't think about the s/c and turbo cars that have it there all the time. Think about the N2O guys. I know some who have it, been through several bottles and don't have one single pass at the track...
Shall we start a Crochet Circle on Friday nights in here? I'll make some shawls and you guys make the rocking chairs. Then we can gather and converse as we crochet ourselves into oblivion.

Well the old folks would certainly find us less offensive.
Piedmont Dragway 30 minutes east
Farmington Dragway an hour west
Hell, Rockingham an hour and a half south
No excuses here.
There are as many reasons not to race at a drag strip as there are to, just depends what's important to you. So as to not turn this into a lounge debate thread, i'll leave it at that.
Dude's mom threw the cops some burgers, thats funnay.
