Everyone has had one car in their life that they always remember. Mine was a 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass S with 403-V8, A3, 2.41:1 Positrack Rear End, Black with Red Interior.
This was my second new car. The first was a 1975 Pinto Wagon, V4, M4, Yellow with Black Interior.
The Cutlass car horn double-beeped many times at the pretty young ladies walking around in Pittsburgh & Buffalo. After all I was young and driving a hot new Cutlass.
My wife-to-be was the first person to ride in my new Cutlass, just when we first started dating. After our wedding in Pittsburgh we took her on our Honeymoon to Old Williamsburg, to Washington DC, then to Philadelphia.
The car’s name was Nellie. Later in her life it was Old Nellie.
She was washed weekly, Turtle waxed monthly (weather permitting). When she was new, many-a-head turned as we drove by, the car was a looker. As our family grew thru the mid to late 80’s, hand washing became “free car washes at gas stations” because both money & time became tight.
She sported full instrumentation. I did change the 85 mph speedometer out with a new speedometer from the 1976 Cutlass year, now the mph went up to 110. I only took her up to 100 once because it took forever.
New out of the box, 0-60 was 10.5 seconds, was the same the day she left our family.
My son remembers the “black car”, my younger daughter not so much.
I was driving a bunch with my company, she was getting old and was breaking down a bit. We needed something new, dependable & cheap. I traded her in for a 1991 Hyundai. The Cutlass had 121,000 on her. My wife & I think of this car often.
Her VIN was 3G37K7D211693
If anyone can find out if she is a survivor or not…. Please let me know.
Here are some pictures of our Cutlass that I could find. Many of the photos have faded due to time, but we will never forget our Cutlass.
Mine was a 1972 Pontiac LeMans. The only difference appearance wise that year from the GTO was a hood and grille. It had the Pontiac wide block 350 and automatic tanny. I pulled it out and slapped a Pontiac 455 bored out to a 462 in it. 273 gears (highway beast). Blew up the 462, had another one built and never got around to putting it in. Sold it for $1500 (solid body with no rust). Damn I was an idiot. Then the guy that bought it took it to a shop to have the motor put in and it got stolen.

My mom and dad a couple of Old's when I was growing up. The one I miss most is my dad's 83 Hurst Old's. It had grey interior and NO t-tops/sunroof. I learned what building and engine and transmission were all about with that car. My dad went through 1 or 2 motors and transmissions in that car. And doesn't like Hurst Lightening Rods???
They also had a 77 (I am only 50% sure on the year model) Delta 88. Black two door. It was a really cool car, too.
If Oldsmobile was still making cars and made a rear wheel drive V8, odds are I'd be driving it right now!
I haven't owned one yet but, I have always had a special fondness for the 1970s Buick Rivieras. Man those things are beautiful. I hope to have one... some day.

My first car has alot of good memories.
1974 Impala, I called it the tank. It was a heavy floaty beast, but was much faster than it had a right to be. The single exhaust was so restrictive and loud it sounded like a raging waterfall driving by.
This car destroyed multiple import cars in wrecks I had, knocked down a fence, and hopped many a center divider. Numerous orange cones and construction lights/signs felt its wrath. It wasn't a 4WD, but it got treated like one many times.
For a while when I took off from home I lived in it. Plenty of room in the back
After about 4 years of abuse, the transmission finally gave way well over 150K miles, and the poor thing got parted out.

i had an 86 cutlass surpreme Brougham 4 door. bought it for 350 dollars back in 2002 while my DSM was broken. it was cheaper to buy than my DSM was to fix.
the drivers seat didnt move backwards, so it was stuck in granny mode with me hugging the steering wheel, and the drivers window didnt roll down, passenger window worked fine, and the rear windows were fixed. it had 220k miles when i got it and it ran like a champ, alternator barely charged a battery, but it got 18mpg and and worked. the 2.78 gears and the anemic 305 meant that it barely got out of its own way anywhere but it did have a positrac. it went mudding, to the drag strip, donuts in fields, cruising around you name it, it did it at some point.
great old car. after i wrecked my DSM i bought a CRX as a primary driver and stopped using the olds for daily work. 40mpg > 18.
you have to understand where i grew up. huge neighborhood with no police presence. so we would hop in the olds and cruise the neighborhood at night and drink beer. keeping it under 30-40mph and just creeping around with 7-8 people in this olds and an icechest full of beer in the trunk. it was awesome.
motor finally seized after sitting for about 4 months without running. i was sad when the guy put it on the trailer, took the wheels off, and cut it in half so he could take it to scrap it. paid us 100 bux for it though

lol Dan, I had an 85 GP with the 305 as my 1st car that saw similar abuse that yours did! When I sold it for $500 it required 1qt of oil per week and was luck if it started within the first 5 minutes of trying when cold...when I sold it with 198,000 miles on the clock, I got a 89 civic hatch 4-spd...

For me, the two that really stand out were a 1981 280ZX Turbo and a 1981 Turbo Trans Am. The worthless 301 in the Pontiac wasn't the reason I remembered the car, there were just some really good times in it and at that time it was a stellar ride. Everyone noticed it.
The ZX though, was fast for it's time, a blast to drive, handled like a champ, and got the looks. Super sharp car. Lot of good and bad times in it. I'm lucky to be alive. At the time I was pretty well muscled and getting in that small car was more like putting it on that getting in it. Years after it was totaled the state took over the wrecking yard where it had been towed and wrote me a letter, telling me I had two weeks to come get the car or they were going to dispose of it. If I'd have had a place to put it I'd have snagged it in a second and pulled that L28ET turbo motor out of it and put in something else.

I used to have a 1964 Galaxie. I was the second owner. I bought it from a little old lady. I put a 427 and a 4spd in it. Station wagon rear leaf springs in the rear, semi metallic brake shoes and the stiffest front springs I could find. I could keep up with the Shalby's in the mountains and it could lift the inside front tire on tight corners. I really miss it.
My first vehicle was a 1979 Chevy pick up. Half-ton long bed, two wheel drive with a 250 straight six and an A3. I bought it and thought it was in good condition - turns out it was a quick paint job to sell the thing to some ignorant buyer. (me)
Well, I started restoring it as I drove it - made it kind of difficult at times. I finally had good metal all the way around the truck and in primer. One cold Saturday morning, after an ice storm, the door bell rang. I could hear my mom answer the door and the guy standing outside said, "I think I just hit your son's truck." My heart sank. I got up, got dressed and went out to assess the damage. The new bed that I put on the truck was smashed into the cab. His 4X4 F-250 was totalled! (HA!)
I ended up getting the truck fixed and the whole thing painted (courtesy of his insurance company). I painted it "Black Saphire" - a Pontiac color that was really cool.
I bought another truck when I was a senior in high school and sold the 79. To this day I regret selling it. I will probably never sell any vehicle I own. I will just keep adding to the collection.
Yeah I know.... I feel the sameway.... the one (of many) I would love to have back today is the one pictured NEXT to Winnebago in the pics you attached to your post.
It is a 1976 Chevy Laguna S3.... nowadays a VERY RARE car.... at the time it was just another car.
It had the "NASCAR" front nose and a "smog-motored" 350. There are not many left... real rust buckets as were many (most) of the cars of those days. PLUS... there only a few thousand of the S3's made so Chevy could qualify the model for use in NASCAR racing.
Way back then .... I remember going to a ALL -Chevy car show at the infamous "Yenko Chevrolet" .... my younger brother drove his new Vette... we parked next to each other and NOT surprisingly everyone was checking out my S3 & ignoring my brother's Vette.
"Those were the days.... we thought they'd NEVER end"..... but they did!!!
PAIndianRider,
Welcome to this forum brother! I hope all on this board can welcome my oldest brother. He is the true gear head of our family. See the attached picture link for his current projects:
I am currently restoring a '71 Cutlass S. Currently has a 350 w/ TH350 in it. However, I have 455 w/TH 400 sitting next to it patiently waiting to go in. Now if I can only find some more time and some more money...

^^^ I am glad that you guys (and gals) enjoyed my thread. It brought tears to my eyes writing it.
Keep posting, I love reading about your "old gals" you wished you still had !
Welcome to the board, PAIndianRider! I have a soft spot in my heart for old 67-72 C10s...especially since I am currently working a 70 short-wide myself. My first truck was a two-tone brown 79 long bed, second truck was a 72 long bed...rust colored primer. Still have the 72, minus a few parts of course. Those parts can be found on my 70.
sort of off-topic, but those v-4's can make some SERIOUS power! i dont know who has ever been to the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, but those mini sprints used to have v-4's back in the day, some still do. Those motos sound hella cool too!
i looove your cutty, especially since it s black!1
Fit on the GTO? Looks like they don't even fit on the truck.
Yep CornDog....The tires are Goodyear slicks 15x33x18" monted on 15 x 14" Weld wheels. Those wheels/tires are just on the truck for the picture.
But historically, many modified cars of the late 60's - early 70's used wheel/tire combinations like my truck. Many of the gasser & altered class car used wheels/tires that poked out of the fender wells even further... 6 inches or more.
I do have a "narrowed" 9" Ford rearend that I will be putting under the C10... My plans are to do a "back-half" with a "ladder bar" suspension. In the front the stock suspension will be replaced with a gasser style "straight front axle". The truck's roof is going to be chopped 5 inches and the engine (a 383ci stroker sbc) setback for better weight distribution.
The C10 is being setup to race at nostalgia races modeled after those great "gassers" of the 60's & early 70's that used to dominate the drag strip in their day.
