I recently got an HDMI cable for my PS3, and for some reason idk how to get my surround sound hooked up to it.... I had it working before i got the HDMI cable. But at the moment i can't seem to figure out how to make it work... My surround sound it pretty old but i don't think this has anything to do with it... If anyone knows what the heck i can do please let me know... battlefield bad company and GT prologue aren't the same without it!

HDMI is digital audio, or are you celebrating that fact?
Deaner...how did you have the audio from your PS3 hooked up before? Are you taking the sound out of your TV and in to your receiver or coming straight off the PS3? You can use the HDMI for video (straight to the TV) and an optical cable for audio (straight to the receiver) if your receiver supports it. I assume, since you said it was "older", that you can't hook HDMI in to your receiver.
If your receiver only has analog inputs, then you have to make sure that your TV can take sound off of HDMI and send it out through analog outputs. It should, but may be a setting in your TV.
HDMI carries the audio AND video signal. Do you have the HDMI from the playstation going to the TV or to the surround sound receiver? You'd probably need to get the HDMI plugged into the receiver and then from the receiver to the TV. The one drawback, some receivers that are over a couple of years ago won't feed a high def video signal back to the monitor. I bought my father a $500 receiver about 3 years ago and it wouldn't go higher than 720p. The other way to try it is to send the HDMI to the TV, mute the TV sound and feed the audio outs from the PS3 to the receiver, if the PS3 allows both signals to be broadcast at the same time. There are other ways to get the audio signal to the receiver, but may involve more $$$.
Superiority has arrived. These are the X4's, but it appears as though they've been replaced by the X41's. 7.1 DD Surround Sound FTMFW. I'll be placing my order as soon as I get some money to spare.
When I get it in, I'll be selling my X4's for a hundred bucks plus shipping. Anyone want dibs? This isn't happening tomorrow, so don't be shocked if it's a couple of weeks away.
Thanks for the speedy responses, sorry it took me forever to respond...
**I am just going to use this one but anyone feel free to help**
Yes it has a receiver, is a Cambridge sound works desktop theater 2500 looks like this
It does not have an HDMI hook-up but it does have the optical. I tried hooking the optical up but still nothing
My TV has an HDMI hook-up but no optical output
I know with the Uverse Cable boxes, if you went HDMI from the receiver to the TV, and then tried going optical, it really screwed up the sound. I'm betting the PS3 only sends out audio via the HDMI OR the optical. Have you contacted Sony to find out if that's the case? I found this......

The PS3 can output audio via optical while the HDMI is hooked in to the monitor. The video is interesting, something I didn't know, but unnecessary.
Deaner, when you hooked up your HDMI and went through the settings to tell the PS3 that you were using that connection, did you do the "basic" setup with all of the automatic settings? Go through the advanced one (don't worry, you can't screw anything up beyond a 5 second fix) and when it asks about your audio, select optical output. It has been a while since I have set mine up and my PS3 isn't currently hooked up (don't have a step-down converter for Spain yet), so I can't remember exactly which settings sub-menu it is in. Sound settings would be the logical guess, though. Hope that helps.

Unless youre doing 7.1 or your tv is old it won't matter.
If the TV has an optical output, just use that and turn the volume down on your tv when the surround sound is on.
This would be another possible solution. Some TV's have their optical output tied to the digital tuner, so this may or may not be an option.

Yes i think it went through something like that when i first hooked it up... When i get home from class tonight i will look through all the settings for something advanced. Then i will just look for something that says optical right?

I have my system set up similar to what i think youre looking for. I have HDMI going to my tv from my ps3. I have optical going from my PS3 to the reciever. I also have the audio out on mytv going to a different input on the reciever. I use that for when i listen to tv. My reciever does not have 2 optical inputs, otherwise my satellites audio would go to the reciever too.
Just make sure that the sound output on hte PS# is set to optical and that the internal speakers on the TV are off. Any decent TV should have a setting to disable its sound.

If you don't have an optical output on your TV, you can do as Hellmonkey is doing and run a set of analog cables (the red and white ones) in to your receiver. This will really just satisfy getting TV sound (i.e. satellite, antenna, etc.) to your receiver, but won't get the multi-channel audio from the PS3.
You will find an option for setting your audio output, just select "optical" and you will be good. It will cut the audio going through HDMI, so no need to disable your TV speakers.
I had all the wires hooked up right, i just had to go into the setting and adjust the sound to optical! thank you guys so much... sorry for starting this noob thread!
