Police said a man in Georges Township, Fayette County, fired a metal cannon that sent a two-pound lead ball into his neighbor's house.
William Edward Maser, 54, fired the cannon in his yard on Tent Church Road Wednesday evening, said Trooper Brian Burden of the Pennsylvania State Police. He said he was not sure how regularly Mr. Maser fired his cannon.
The cannon shot a lead ball through the side of his neighbor's house, breaking a window and traveling through a wall before landing in a clothes closet. No one was injured.
The cannon is an 80-pound homemade replica of cannons used during the French and Indian War. It has been impounded as evidence.
Mr. Maser regularly participates in battle re-enactments, Trooper Burden said.
He has been charged with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and disorderly conflict.

I always grew up wondering if I had an artillery piece in my backyard and I had a huge enclosed yard and somehow got the sound to muffle and I just fired off rounds in any direction, do you think they would be able to find me?

Funny story about cannons. Some of my old crewmates were at their bosses house a few weeks ago. The boss decided that he wanted to fire off one of his cannon (he collects stuff, and they had just refurbished a smaller one for the yacht). It "was" a 1 of 11 made for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana. Good sized, 2' long, 6" dia. They cleaned it out, loaded up with some black powder, lit the fuse.........BAM! Blew the side out of it! Big chunk of iron blasted into the grass and the trolley split into pieces! Boss walks up, takes a look, "well, I guess we could have expected that, considering how the marriage worked out!"
True Story, saw the pictures.

yes, before the round hit the ground... if they were watching... which they probably would be after the first few rounds are fired

I suppose I could first work on the GTO then go to school.
nothing sends the message of "smurf you" like firing a cannon.

Ironically I was walking into a local hardware store the other day and they had 2 "replica" cannons made of plastic pipes and some wagon wheels.
I thought how cool would it be to get a real cannon for the front yard. Now, I must begin construction.

I was thinking more of just randomly firing a shot every several months.
In all likelihood....Yes, they'd probably get you.
If you were to hit say, a roof, the round would naturally go through at least that and end up somewhere underneath.
Now the final resting place of the round will NOT be DIRECTLY under the first impact location....the "slope" created between the two will give you the general trajectory of the round as it came in, which will give you a more or less straight line in the direction of the artillery piece.
If someone is REALLY good they could estimate the round's propellant charge and actually simulate the full arc of the round, which would give them a point of origin, but even if they couldn't figure out how high/far the round traveled, after a few rounds they'd have lines that would all intersect somewhere in your backyard.
lol, Fayette County isn't really Pittsburgh, but I consider myself one of the PGH Goat Crew, so it's close enough Yes, there's a lot of crazies here. haha.

A friend of mine, A retired army ranger vietnam era, got a cannon for his 60th or 65th birthday. It is a class iii weapon and sits in on a round concrete slab in his front yard, chained of course. He fires it several times a year. He shot my other friends barn from more than a mile away. He loves to fire paper wads when cars drive by his house. Hellofagoodtime.
