I'm active duty so I'm a little biased. I just don't like the idea of putting my life in the hands of fellow soldiers who only train maybe 1/3 of the amount active guys train.
That being said, reserves/guard still have their own benefits, such as, still being able to maintain a civilian lifestyle the majority of each year of service. The way I would get more information would be to involve a recruiter from each branch you're looking at, BUT make sure you verify all their information that they'll be feeding you. Sometimes, you'll find a recruiter who doesn't care and will feed you exactly what you want to hear, but only partially true facts. They should be able to give you websites or books to help you do your own research a little better.
Also, just because your looking at guard/reserves does NOT mean you won't deploy or see combat. Just know that somewhere down the road in your service time, you will likely deploy to Iraq/Afghanistan.
I've met quite a few reservists and guardsmen over here in Iraq lately and though I've met a few who know their shit, there are still quite a few who need more training/knowledge. Don't get me wrong though, most of the reservists/guardsmen that I do meet have been nice and mostly intelligent people...they just haven't quite had enough practice at what they get asked to do on a deployment.

You need to still hide the car somehow. usually I try park next to some sort of tree or bush that at least hides the car from certain angles.

That's exactly what I did...the army has paid 65,000$ of my student loans for my bachelors. You have to waiver the GI bill to get it though, and the GI bill is pretty nice after the revamp.
Just talk to a recruiter and they'll swarm you information, then take that information and filter it til you find the points that interest you and do research on different sites/books. Keep in mind that some things in the army are 'possible', but you have to do other things in order to get to those things. That's how some recruiters operate...they tell you that you can do this, but they skip the part where it might take you 2 years to complete everything you need to get a shot at doing what you wanted to do.

Research, research, research..
The army doesn't offer TA? Or did you complete your college prior to enlisting?

I finished my bachelors in 06, joined the army in 07. They do have TA still, though, it's no where near covering the cost of me trying to start my masters. $750/cr for my masters and TA will offer (I believe) $250/cr...so there's quite a large gap there.
I'm going to see the National Guard recruiter tomorrow. Have talked with an AF Reserve recruiter but need to again.
I know they can feed you BS. Luckily I have a co-worker who's pretty high up in the Tennessee National Guard who can help me filter the BS.
I know its a possibility. I'm planning/hoping to go in as an officer. From what they tell me it'll be 2 years before they can even send me overseas cause it'll take that long for me to finish everything.
Like I said, big decision. And no I'm not just doing it for the money(but thank you deytookerjaabs). I want to do my part. Would I do it for free? No. But the student loan payoffs part is just a bonus. But not all of us were able to go to college without borrowing money.
