First off im glad to see you're ok. Looking at those pics, im going to say the car is done for considering a hood alone is $1k, a bumper by itself is like $600, each headlight is like $700, and now youre saying the engine isnt straight. Parts for these cars are ridiculously expensive.

As others have said, we are all glad that you are OK. It is clearly a high hit as you dived under the car in front of you. When it comes to collisions, that is a good thing as it tends to minimize expensive structural damage. Low hits wipe out subframe rails and get very costly and lead to totalled cars quickly.
Best of luck with it and hopefully you get her up and running soon.

Holy shit, I just saw this. I'm really glad to hear that you're ok. Highway accidents don't usually turn out that well.

I think the airbags are fine. You didn't really need them and I'm sure it's better that they didn't deploy. You'd probably feel a lot worse if your head was flying forward like it did, but then hit the bag coming at you at 200 mph.

Unfortunately, I think the car will be totaled. With the ridiculously low value these cars are at, it doesn't take much to total them. And with the engine out of place, I think it's over. But in the end, who cares? You're alright and that's all that matters. There are plenty of other GTO's for you to have.

By the way as a Dad - thanks guys - this has been a tough couple of hours. I really appreciate the concern for Jr.

We will be back - this is just and inconvience.

Steve

My son just told me about this. From one Dad to another I'm so glad Jr. is okay. When you first got the news it must have been quite a shock, something I always fear. The car looks pretty bad and I don't know if I'd want to fix it. I'd salvage what I could and find another one. Again the most important thing is that your son is fine.

Glad to hear you're ok. Curious how you lost control though, if you were both going about the same speed and the jeep hit the brakes just barely before you did. Was it wet out or something?

Truth. My car looked almost exactly the same, cept I cracked the windshield and, because they pushed me off the bridge, the rear bumper cover would've needed a respray.

Sorry to read about the accident but glad you are ok. Unfortunately I am pretty sure the car is totaled especially if the motor is pushed back. Good luck with the insurance and feel better.

Its not uncommon for the airbags not to deploy when the hit is that high on the front end. Had the impact been lower they definitely would have.

Haha, yeah. The Jeep came away mostly unscathed. Submarined it so it just had some bumper damage. May have undercarriage damage, but I obviously couldn't tell.

Thanks a lot dude.

Wow, sorry to hear about this and glad you are ok. After riding motorcycles for a couple years, I hate being behind SUV's in the GTO. I am not comfortable when I can't see the road past the car in front of me. (I also have learned to hate tinted windows for the same reason.) I feel like I'm driving 70 miles an hour at a wall 20 or 30 feet in front of me. If he slams on the breaks.... well you know.

Ever find out why he slammed? Did he hit anything?

He said that the guy in front of him hit the breaks. It was obvious the Jeep guy who I hit was on his phone when I hit him. I could barely make out the arm and I was thinking before the crash, "Man do I hate being behind guys on cell phones since they never know how to break right". The problem was that I didn't get even further back (was probably about 5 car lenghts) than I was and, sure enough, the fool breaks as hard as humanly possible and bam.

The other thing was, the back of his truck was almost a full tint. I could just barely make out the outline of his arm up by his head and couldn't see the small SUV (white Kia or something) in front of him who had breaked hard. Normally, I can see through a car/smaller SUV and see the break lights in front and get on my breaks before the person in front of me (who wasn't paying attention) can get on theirs.

I didn't even really think of that till you mentioned it because I'm so used to being able to see a car 2 or even 3 cars up break beforehand so that I can prepare myself to break.

Bah, it makes me really despise strong tints now for that reason alone.

Too common =(

This is about the 4th thread I've read with a totaled YJ. And in each thread there is another poster talking about how they can sympathize with the thread starter about how "THEIR" YJ got totaled. They even totaled a YJ in the movie transformers!!! ... It's official.... God hates YJ's. I'm glad I got a red one but to me the best colors for a GTO are Red, Blues, and Yellow...my opinion. I still feel bad for YJ's

Well I meet the adjuster sometime today.

2 Body guys have looked at it - no real consensus.

One says he doesen't think the frame is damaged, since all of the body panels & gaps are okay, plus the airbags are intact. Given that - he believes the insurance company will try and fix it.

The other isn't sure until he has the front radiator & support out. Possible the motor is just shifted and will come back once the raditor support is removed. He is the guy we are using - he is good. He also told us that Liberty Mutual is very good/fair on loss settlements - so good news there.

Plus I am not nicking them for things like car rental and storage fees - so may help the cause,

We will see.

Well just got back from the adjustment one of those bad news/okay news day.

The car was totalled. The costs coming up on the computer were in excess of 16K to fix, before they even cut off the radiator to check the motor mounts etc, etc.

On the okay side - since the airbags didn't go off - the adjuster told me he is recommending I retain the car so I can get all of the parts out of it.

Have no clue what the net payout will be - should know shortly.

All and all -- the adjuster was a good guy - so that part of it was easy on the nerves.
