As some of you know I've been catching a bunch of chipmunks in my yard and relocating them several miles away. Our neighborhood has become over run with these little critters. They made a mess out of my other shed with all kinds of nests and chewing all my cloth rags and gloves. I know the mice are around too, but it's the chipmunks that are the biggest problem.
I've caught at least 30+ and relocated them so far this year and I even caught a squirrel or two, but that I can tolerate and understand. This morning however was a little different. I've been trying to get this one particular chipmunk for the last week and can't get him. I caught all his friends, but this guy is either too smart to go into the small cage trap or is scared.
So this morning I went and opened the blinds like usual and looked up at the trap. I see that the door is closed which means something is in the trap. I then see something gray inside and figure I caught another squirrel and got dressed to let him go. As I started to get closer to the trap I could plainly see it was NOT NO squirrel!!! It started hissing at me and I got a chill up my spine. When I got up to the trap this is what I see............
I was nervous opening the trap to let him go. I thought he might spin around and go after me, but he just left the trap and went on his not so merry way. He was pissed as hell too and gave me a little back look before he went next door and under his shed where I think he lives. I don't mind these kind of animals because they don't tear up the yard and make a mess. Now I know what's been eating all the peanut butter in my mouse snap traps. It's the time of year when these animals are getting ready for winter and are eating everything they can get their mouths around. I never ever expected to catch one of these though, lol, lol..........
Rok, Get a .40 s/w handgun, and get .40Shot for it, it's liks a small shotgun and you dont have to worry about where the bullet goes. Advise your neighbors about your "new trap" and that it's loud and sounds like fireworks. Leave the carcus in the hole in the ground. it worked for me at my parents house!
Hahaha Paul, I needed to go fully loaded, lol. This was a youngster, fully grown ones wouldn't fit and or the trap would close on the body and it would be able to back out. This guy was able to turn around in the trap, but it closed too quick. I bet it closed on his tail, but that wouldn't have been enough.
Oh and for the ones that don't know what it is, it's an Opossum or Possum which is a better known name.
Wow lol. That must have been one hell of a suprise Rok LOL. We got a few of those guys by my house...
We have a chipmunk problem too.. but my Golden has eaten 2 of them alive and they are too scared to come near the house now
Bring him over to my house, I've got a groundhog he can gnaw on... if he can catch before it goes under the shed. LOL
.

LOL I'll see. He seems to just have a sweet tooth for Chipmunks. My older golden we had before him caught and ate like at least 10 mice in our basement before... never chipmunks. Don't know how he'll take to groundhogs

it does matter where they go.....saw one of the local guys take 5 shots at a rabid baby racoon before it went down
at this point I asked if I needed to go get teh shotgun out of the trunk with buckshot for him....

my buddy's 3 year old lab has a taste for baby rabbits, she's caught at least 2.
my 7 year old backed up from a baby rabbit I caught. My 2 year old.......she chases anything that moves, she'd probably trample it first though.
See them around here all the time. Mostly as road kill though, they are pretty slow.

A few years ago, after loosing a cat to a coyote, I purchased a medium sized coyote trap.
Put some dog food bait inside and on 2 consecutive nights, caught what I think was the same raccoon.
The question was then posed by the neighbor. "Whatcha gonno do if you catches a skunk?"
Trap now sits unused.

To which you reply "stick it in your car after you go to bed, then drop some firecrackers in there to piss it off...Mind your business".

Yeah I know what you mean, I didn't think of even catching a possum nevermind a skunk. I saw a trapper who did catch skunks that were under my neighbors deck. He put a blanket over the traps and then took the skunks away. Not one of them sprayed. I'm not too sure if I'm going to put the trap back out for a while..............

It's a never ending saga back there. Our cats are indoor cats and they alert me to whatever is back there a dusk or night. I did see the whole family of possums back there in the beginning of the summer, but then never again until yesterday. I now know they live under my neighbors shed. He's the same neighbor who had the skunks, lol. The possums do clean up the dead mice and moles I catch. I was putting the "bodies" up in the corner of the yard and they kept dissapearing. I knew something was taking them, but thought it was one of the neighborhood cats not this snarling thing, lol.

Wow, they look a lot scarier up close like that versus when I see them (slowly) crossing the road LOL.

Now that's what always threw me off...I used to think it was a Possum when people talked about them but it's actually an Opussum.
Me: "Hey, I saw a Possum today"
Response: "No, you actually saw an Opossum today"
I guess a whole pack of Opossum would be called a posse of Opussum?
