Navada Silver State Classic

I'm looking at entering my GTO in the 2011 Silver State Classic. I have many more mods to do to get to where I think I would want to be as far as performance.

How much reliable horsepower would it take to propel the GTO close to 200 mph in one mile?

I woud definitely be more worried about keeping the car pointed where you want it to go and the rubber on the ground than over all top speed. If you don't fininsh the race it don't count and those roads are not meant to be driven at those speeds. Sure they are relatively flat, but relatively flat for 55 MPH. You can see the slight ruts in the road which makes cutting corners a bit difficult especially at the speeds you are asking about. Good luck.

To do something like this not only will you need mass quanities of HP but all the safety gear too. Full cage, Hans, seats, 5pt belts, racing suit, fire supression system and so on. I would love to do one of their TSD rallys. I've been wanting to do it for a few years now but just not enough time.

that dude survived that crash cause of all his safety equipment. Full cage, 5 point belts and neck brace I would contribute to the key reasons why he walked way. Sure sounded like a tire blowout. I sure as hell wouldn't take a street stock GTO out there. Your gonna need to cut out all the air from getting under the car very first just to maintain stability. And thats just to start with. To do 200mph on a 2 lane road I wouldn't attempt it in anything less then a full blown racecar.

Its a fun race, but takes a bit of money to do it right. I rode as navigator in my friends mustang cobra, he had a roll bar, and a five point harness. I think he had to go to Vegas to get his license a couple months before the event, I can't remember how much money that was. We were in the 125mph class which I think is as high as you can go the first time you do it. That mph is an average speed, usually they will let you go 135-140mph and they have people with radar guns checking you. If you go over your tech speed there is a highway patrol officer waiting for you at the finish line. I am not sure how fast they will let you go without a roll bar, maybe not even 125mph. There were some bad ass cars there though. Its cool just to go to Ely and check out the cars before the race, they have a car show the day before the race at one of the parks or schools or something.

Go karts?

They have slower speed classes as well. The 120mph class is reasonable.

Look up SCCA, NASA or Pro Auto and get out on a real race track. Thats what we all do.

theres no cops your just disqualified for the bracket you are racing in. i lived in ely for 9 years have done the race many times and flagged in it as well. my good friend rick joyce was one of the promoters for the race. it was really cool before he passed away. the race is on 318 and there are catagories for speed runs butif you want to run with big dogs you better have some coin.
