Hello all. This is my first post on this site. I have been looking over lots of old threads and it looks like you guys have a ton of information available!
I am looking into purchasing a 2004 GTO and i have a few questions i was hoping you could help me with. The car has 12K miles, however it was comes with a salvage rebuilt title due to flood damage. The car had a new GM LS2 installed after the flood and some of the electronics have been replaced to get in road worthy (from what i am told).
The car does still need a few items, and that is why i am here to pick your brains. According to the seller the Airbag light is on. He claims it has been traced back to the Airbag Module which is located in the armrest console. The car was never in an physical accident, just water damage. Is this a plug & play replacement? The water damage kind of scares me, even though he stated the water only came up to the floor of the car.
The seller also stated the power door locks/trunk release/fuel door release do not work from inside the car. They must me opened manually. The Interior dome lights and radio also are not functioning. I believe the radio turns on, but needs a code entered in order unlock. Is it possible that these are all linked to one spot? I am not familiar at all with the electronics/or wiring of these cars. I am going to pick up some a manual for the car today hopefully. Is there a certain manual that you reccommend for this model car?
I normally work on Audi's, and have not been involved with anything of this nature since my 01 TA WS6 (LS1 6spd). Everything elso on the car is in good functioning condition. Any input you guys have would be great. Even if you can point me in the right direction to start digging for information i would really appreciate it. Thanks, Marc
The flood damage + salvage title are two strikes against the car.
Flood cars should always be avoided, whatever is apparently wrong with it now is only part of what was really affected and there is sure to be more trouble later. This is especially true if it was a salt water flood because of the corrosive nature of the salt, but fresh water does plenty of damage as well. These cars can have enough electrical troubles on their own without help from a flood.
The salvage title can be a problem with getting financing and insurance, and depending on the DMV laws in your state you may have to jump through some hoops to get it registered and titled. The value of the car also takes a hit and it will be more difficult to sell later on.
The price of used GTO's has been dropping and you can find clean non-damaged ones for not that much money. Skip this one and keep looking.

^^^True^^^ However if you have a trustworthy mechanic and or you can fix it yourself. With only 12K you could have a diamond in the rough. I only state this since my bro had an 88 foxbody 5.0 that was flooded back in H-Town early 2000's. With a good mechanic, the motor / trans was rebuilt / rewired and it was good as new. But to each is own. I would only pursue if you want to take that risk. Good Luck and welcome to the forum...

I would never buy a flood damaged car unless it was proven all the electronics were replaced along with all the wiring. Only way I would buy one is if I was going to rip it apart and race it.

I don;t think you can open the fule door any other way than using the button. maybe a screw driver and a hammer. I'm faily certain if you replace the airbag module you will need to go to the dealer and have it scanned with a Tech II. But to be honest there are alot of other stuff that could make that light go on. If the radio is locked it sounds like somebody allready tried to replace the BCm and that didn't work for them and they are trying to get rid of a head ache. Do your self a favor and listen to the above people.
