I am looking for the best 10" sub, driven by a JL 500/1, in a custom box in the trunk. I have an inexpensive Alpine now, it is o.k., just looking to waste money and upgrade.....
Loller W7. If you want to spend that much, be my guest. Take a look at Soundstream. That have some good stuff at some really reasonable prices. I also have done an install on 10" Rockford P3. That is a great sounding sub. Didn't use to like them, but their new stuff is awesome.

Put it in the cabin. You will not be disappointed.
I've got a Kicker Solobaric L7 with dual four ohm voicecoils(which you will need to get a 2 ohm load for the JL amp) in a slot ported box driven by a JL 500.1 that hits hard. I think I picked up the sub for $150 on ebay for last years model.

I've had quite a few JL audio, Alpine, and kicker subs. Can't really go wrong with those brands as long as the box is built correctly, but for the Money, ED is hard to beat. I have 4 9kv.2s now and love them.

Personally, I'd either go with a Kicker CVX for a round sub, or an L7 if you want a square. The greatest benefit to the Solobarics is that a single 10" L7 requires only .66 cubes of airspace in a sealed enclosure. The CVX only has a .8 cube minimum sealed requirement. They are excellent choices for when you're short on trunk space but want some decent power.
My favorite sub that I have used was an Image Dynamics IDQ. Requires very small air space (like 0.25 cu ft) and hits good and sounds great! Had it in my truck for 8 years, very impressed. Totalled my truck and the stereo went with it. I think I only paid like $100 for the 10" IDQ V2.
Personally I like it over Kicker, Alpine, Jensen (Hope that one wasnt serious)...

I just switched from a Kicker L7 12" to a JL 12W3. The best bang for your buck IMO is the JL Audio brand simply because they are a good sub for overall sound, if its bang your looking for go with a Kicker solo baric.
if you want sound quality go with commissar...Image dynamics is great...JL is decent but a W7 is way to expensive for what it is. Any other questions feel free to PM me...also check out Sound Splinter with the Rl-p or if you can find one an RL-i or stereo integrity, etc etc.

I had 2 in my quarter panels and they sounded great! IDQ 10v2's.

For the money and SQ I have always liked and used elemental designs...I had an old nomex flat cone 10in in my Trans Am before it got wrecked with a 1.2 cu foot box I built and it hit hard and sounded great too...plus the guys are always great to work with when you have questions or need advice on their equipment...

There is NO best ANYTHING in car audio. It all depends upon what you want. Do you want bass that will rip your head off and win SPL competitions? DD 9910 or some other SPL oriented sub. Do you want unparalleled clarity and linearity for sound quality? Then check out focal, Adire, or perhaps the highly overrated 10w7. (It's a good sub just highly overrated by the fanboi's.)
The "best" sub for the money for my goals of maximum spl will run upwards of 500 a pop and that's a competitor pricing where normal retail will cost you upwards of 1300+.
An SPL oriented sub is going to sound like ass compared to a sound quality based sub if given equal installs. And as such a sound quality oriented sub is going to fall significantly short of what an SPL oriented sub is capable of doing if again given optimum installs.
Any sub that claims to do both is a compromise and falls short of what others can do.
Thus there is NO best sub for car audio - only the sub that most closely matches your goals and your budget.

I cannot emphatically agree more. Install dictates 95% of what is heard.

ED can suck my left one - even if they made their subs out of pure gold.

FYI, a lot of the sound comes from the design of the enclosure...
x2! (Most of the sound actually. )

it all really depends on what ur looking for in terms of sound quality and/or punch.
Punch is indicative of good midbass.... Personally I like having a system in which a snare drum strike makes you blink every time that you feel in the gut. But that "punch" has nothing to do with sub and more to do with midbass driver setup.

I have a termlab.usb if you want to get a good spl reading on it! **
** Be forwarned the termlab.usb is THE hardest meter in all the land and tends to crush egos regarding SPL be they legal or outlaw readings....

This is very true, however the L7 will sound king kong with a severe case of flatulance in the shower with that small of a sealed box. Ask me how I know....lol

IDQ!!! One HELL of a DAMN good sub!!! Excellent sound quality and excellent output all from a ported box!!

Given equal installs you wont be able to hear a difference in subs. Mark Eldrich never had any issues winning sound quality compititions using L7s and solo x's.

I would disagree ,the ul12 from critical mass will spl with all but a few and is great for sq,of coarse its $3000!
After doing some preliminary research on their subs, they are still a compromise.
Mainly in the voice coil - a 4 layer 3" diameter coil can only handle a certain level of power. No amount of "cooling vents" are going to help and that's simple thermodynamics there. I have no doubt it will handle 1kW rms indefinately, but throw a full true 2kW rms and that coil's glue will melt given a little time. And when that glue chars the voice coil literally will "come unglued." Throw a pair of my zapco C2K9.0s on one and its days will be numbered.
Many "true" spl sub will utilize an 8 layer coil which will handle significantly more power than an equivalent 4 layer. And 8 layer coil will also increase the BL factor courtesy of more windings in the gap, however it will kill sound quality in that the inductance will be too high. It will also add weight to the moving mass of the sub (mms) thus impacting Fs which is then combatted by having a stiffer suspension, now your sub becomes less efficient and needs a bigger box for an spl application. This also narrows effective bandwith. But iirc an 8 layer coil is thicker than a 4 layer, thus the magnetic gap must be larger and again lowering BL and increasing the rate with which BL will drop off relative to excursion.
I could go on to include those 7" spiders but will digress.
That sub, while freakin amazing, still leaves some to be desired if one is persuing outright SPL. As far as SQ it should be right there (or better than) the W7 courtesy of the technology and design they put into it. A very good sub none the less!
Hey bumpin Yota...what do you think would be good for a slim line sub to go in a side panel enclosure? right now im leaning towards a kenwood excelon 10 or maybe 12....it having to be around 4" or less depth really limits my options. about 1 cu.ft sealed. I listen to all kinds of music, from new country, rock, rap, alternative...SQ is most important, something that has some lowbass extension but also a some midbass.
