After doing some preliminary research on their subs, they are still a compromise.
Mainly in the voice coil - a 4 layer 3" diameter coil can only handle a certain level of power. No amount of "cooling vents" are going to help and that's simple thermodynamics there. I have no doubt it will handle 1kW rms indefinately, but throw a full true 2kW rms and that coil's glue will melt given a little time. And when that glue chars the voice coil literally will "come unglued." Throw a pair of my zapco C2K9.0s on one and its days will be numbered.
Many "true" spl sub will utilize an 8 layer coil which will handle significantly more power than an equivalent 4 layer. And 8 layer coil will also increase the BL factor courtesy of more windings in the gap, however it will kill sound quality in that the inductance will be too high. It will also add weight to the moving mass of the sub (mms) thus impacting Fs which is then combatted by having a stiffer suspension, now your sub becomes less efficient and needs a bigger box for an spl application. This also narrows effective bandwith. But iirc an 8 layer coil is thicker than a 4 layer, thus the magnetic gap must be larger and again lowering BL and increasing the rate with which BL will drop off relative to excursion.
I could go on to include those 7" spiders but will digress.
That sub, while freakin amazing, still leaves some to be desired if one is persuing outright SPL. As far as SQ it should be right there (or better than) the W7 courtesy of the technology and design they put into it. A very good sub none the less!
Remember thats a "pair" of those exquisite amps you are talking about. And for "SPL" you will not destroy one with those. (SPL= Burp?) SQ is unmatched period. Now that is opinion as everyone is aware. But I have a couple in a less than perfect enclosure and they sound great!
dd for sp,l idq for sq. but both will sound shitty in a poor quality box. if money is in ? spend it on a well designed boxed and but sub par speakers in it until you can afford better.
Hey bumpin Yota...what do you think would be good for a slim line sub to go in a side panel enclosure? right now im leaning towards a kenwood excelon 10 or maybe 12....it having to be around 4" or less depth really limits my options. about 1 cu.ft sealed. I listen to all kinds of music, from new country, rock, rap, alternative...SQ is most important, something that has some lowbass extension but also a some midbass.
Sadly enough I have zero experience in slim line subs. Head on over to www.termpro.com and do some searches about slim line subs. Personally I've been leery of them when spending my hard earned money...lol

8.8kW rms of sonic fun!

I believe you underestimate the destructive power of 4400w rms... I have yet to find a sub that doesnt cry "uncle" via coil glue begining to melt (you know the stressed sub smell) when the Zaps are at full power. In 5 minutes on normal music they (4 9.0's) locked my two DD 9915s! (Never show off too long for a female friend....LOL) On the flip side of that, I have not been able to goof around with any subs using a 4" coil either such as the Team RF 18s used with their TC 4hp motor...

x2, however dont pay some shop to build you a substandard box. Build it yourself. And trust me, it is IMPOSSIBLE to overbuild your box. Most of my boxes from my spl days could double as jack stands for my 5,000lb suv - fully braces at ALL corners then fiberglassed. The bracing was a pain in the ass - I did 45* angle in all 4 corners the whole length of the box, then I had to cut compound 45* angles for all the corners at each end of the box as well. The saving grace was that each box for each 15 was relatively small - 2.4cf per 15...
But anyhoo the point is overbuild that bitch....IF YOU CAN!!!

I would go with JL or Kicker. I'm looking to replace both factory subs for 8" kicker subs. and like that I can have trunk space again.

It seems that the Stereo Integrity BMs are almost ready. Someone in the general public has a ferrite version (Production will be a neo). Should be an awesome option in the slim line world.
