TRANY HELP! Getting Ripped off?

I really need some help on this one guys. I have a 2004 GTO, 46,000 miles. The only thing done to it is CAI K&N + short RIP SHIFTER + Diablo programming. I hardly ever race my car.
It all started out with a strange "grinding" noise that comes about whenever I accelerate from 0mph (whether from 1st or 2nd). It seems to be coming from the rear, so a mechanic told me it might be the differential. So I decided to change the differential fluid and see if that helps eliminate the noise. And then the problems began:

Took it for an oil + trans + diff fluid change at a garage down the street. Same day, shifting into 4th made a "crunching" noise. Kept doing it for a week, about 90% of the time. Same noise when shifting to 6. "Grinding" noise still there.
Took it to dealership, they said trans + diff fluid is not right color. They changed the fluids to the correct ones. Noise while shifting into 4th reduced to about 30% of the time.
They told me the "grinding" noise was coming from the exhaust "flexing" when accelerating, more specifically the heat shields were loose. They tightened them up, but still the noise continues.
Suddenly, shifting it into 1st made a very loud "crunching" noise. Took it straight to transmission shop, they told me:
1. The cluctch is burned along with the fly wheel
2. synchros all damaged, including reverse synchro
3. forks worn out
4. blocking rings and cones need replacement
So, they quoted me about $6,800 to REBUILD the trans and install a new clutch assembly. OR $5,500 to get a NEW trans and clutch assembly.

Is all this necessary? Am I getting ripped off here?
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I appreciate any feedback.
I gotta make a decision by tomorrow morning.

AND they told me that the clutch assembly and trans all has to be from GM, because GM built it this specific way like the Corvette and the Camaro. So, basically, I can't buy after market products.

Dude!! Tick Performance will rebuild it bad ass for 1850 plus shipping. A Monster clutch is less than a grand, and a Tick clutch Master Cylinder is 360. Tick warranties their rebuilds for a year.

They are full of shit about the aftermarket parts. There are a BUNCH of us running aftermarket clutches. They are just trying to get over on you.

TBONEKILLA,
AAMCO is where I took it to. Just found a report on them, there's a website called ripoffreport.com. It's like the second report.

My concern is this:
From the symptoms my car was showing before taking it to AAMCO, what was wrong with my car?
Do I really need a whole new transmission?

Dont know what was bad before the fluid problems but grinding is never good. And LOL at the heat sheild being loose as the problem .. smurfing Dealers LOL

wow, who knew? transmission shops now have a new x-ray machine that lets them look clear thru tranny cases and bellhousings.

Okay,
I searched and found one of the sponsors that can do it for alot cheaper:
1. Clutch assembly for $300
2. Transmission higher performance than regular for $2,800

Now, I gotta tow my car AS IS from AAMCO to Val's in Roundlake. Let's see how much AAMCO is going to charge for opening up my trans. There's no way I'm going to let HIM box up my parts.

They are trying to rip you off big time.

I had a level 5 RPM tranny shipped to the house for $2500.

Sounds like its a bit of a hassle, but getting your car outta the shop where it is now is a step in the right direction.
Im glad you went with a site sponsor and didnt let that place just rip you off.
Good for you
Keep posting as you know more.
Good luck.

Man that must suck, your telling us that a tranny ripped you off. HAHA. But in all seriousness my trans fried while it was on the dyno after doing all my mods, Modern Muscle lined up with a stage 5 4L60E from RPM in Indiana and it cost me $1900. Now I know you have a T56 but there prices are cheap on those also, you are getting ripped off and you need to run.

Taking your car to AAMCO for a transmission is like taking your car to Jiffylube when your oilpump fails.

You Sure? Your Numbers Dont Add Up

So, they quoted me about $6,800 to REBUILD the trans and install a new clutch assembly. OR $5,500 to get a NEW trans and clutch assembly.

How is a REBUILD cost more than a NEW transmission?

[quote=RED POWER;6156438]Okay,

Clutch assembly for $300.00? what kind of clutch can you get for $300.00?

That had better be one bad ass transmission for $2800.00 and does it include installation at that price?

Do you have Charm's Blow Pop written on your forehead? Is everyone calling you a sucker? They must see you coming.

Seriously guy I am a mechanic and I know first hand most mechanics are like your refrigerator repairman and will take advantage of someone that is green to car repair, they will tell you your flux capacitor is bad and you wouldnt have a clue if they are telling the truth or not, do some more homework and talk to some other people and get references on shops and it will save you a lot of grief over time.

$2800 for a new transmission isnt far off for a T56. A level 5 from RPM is $2400 and that is with a $750 core charge. From there you can upgrade even more. A stock replacement T56 from GM is $3200.

AAMCO is charging me $600 for the inspection.
I tried to have him leave my trans open, but says their policy is to put it together they way it came. I was willing to have a tow company send it to Val's as is. Did not want him to touch it.
So, gotta wait till Monday for him to close it up.
Thanks for all your advice everyone. I'll keep you all updated.

bobbygoat1,
Yes the rebuild is more because he's ordering each part + shipping + labor. That's what he told me anyway.

REDPOWER, sorry you are having difficulty with AAMCO but yes they are nothing but crooks that take advantage of people that are not mechanically inclined, if they are charging you $600.00 for the inspection at least you should be able to drive the car out of there in the same condition you drove it in, and from there I wouldnt just walk away from there I would run away, and post this thread on every forum you can. I use to be in the restaurant business as well, and we had a saying that a satisfied customer may tell about 5 friends the food and service was good, but if you have a dis-satisfied customer he will tell about 100 people the food and service was bad (think about if this happened to you and if it is true) well now days with the internet if service is poor, millions of people know about it and that companys bottom line will reflect that, that is why AAMCO has been going down and disappearing for quite awhile now. Yes I can see how the rebuild can be more now days in the old days we use to rebuild our starters and alternators and water pumps, now we just toss them in the trash and go buy a rebuilt one with a warranty. It is the same as a VCR or DVD player if it breaks toss it in the trash and go get a new one, Good Luck with your repair and do more homework to get you a reputable shop and parts, ask the question on this forum and you will get both good and bad suggestions but at least you should be able to make a educated decision.

DO NOT PAY $5500 FOR A NEW CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION.

If you do you might as well hand them a tube of KY, turn around, pull down your pants, and let them shove the old one up your ass.

Thanks to everyone for reading and posting, I really appreciate you taking the time. It's such a horrible feeling to be taken advantage of. Especially for such a high dollar amount and in these tough economic times, where each penny is accounted for.
