Loud Dead Lifter Noise, opinions on next steps...

So I have what can only be described as a loud lifter noise coming out the passenger side of the motor. This has been going on now for say 1,500 miles. At first it kinda came and went, like maybe there was an oiling issue, and the lifter rotated and freed itself? It didn't

I did add half a can of Seafoam to the crankcase and have since run it like the last 1,000 miles or so. That hasn't happened. It now makes the noise consistently. I have no money and the dealership I believe is going to honor or courtesy warranty it as my '05 now has something less than 16,500 miles on it, M6 btw.

I do have a Jeremy Formato tune, and hope that doesn't become an issue. What was wierd was when I took it to the dealer to have the service writer listen to it, (we drove around the parking lot in first and second gear) it went into safety mode / reduced performance. I shut it off and then re-started it stayed in safety mode. Then when I left it re-set itself and hasn't returned.

Basically I was WAY hesitant to take the car to the dealer for the past couple months. I didn't want them to have to work on it, although I have to believe someone there is capable and hopefully willing attitude wise to do the work well should id develop into something serious like replacing all of the lifters and changing the cam.

I searched and searched and really couldn't find another thread about my problem so here goes...

1. Should I ask about replacing them (should this be the issue) with something different? LS3 lifters, LS7 lifters, caddy race lifters.

2. Assuming I find there is a large wear area on the lifter where it has likely wore the cam lobe as well, are there any stock GM Cams that would be an improvement if it could be ordered and otherwise approved? Assuming they replace the lifters and install a new cam, should I be concerned about anything else? I am already paranoid if the would have to pull the front bumper cover, I don't thing you have to to put a cam in?

I take the car in tomorrow morning. I will be sure and confirm that any work performed and parts replaced are per GM and that I will have no bill whatsoever, not even oil, filter whatever.

In addition to this, the rear-end whines noticeably between 45-50, the passenger seat back won't come forward with the lever / handle, and I have the intermittent steering column rattle.

Thanks for opinions and experiences from those who have had the same or similar issue with their LS1 or LS2.

Todd

The first thing I would of checked a long time ago would of been the rockers.

The second thing to do is drain your oil and see if metal shavings are in it.

Good Luck!

First, I wouldn't dump a full can of Sea Foam in my crankcase and run for any length of time. In fact, I never dump any in my crankcase at all. Second, I *personally* wouldn't be asking them for any upgrades of any kind until they determine what's wrong. Until then, I'd be very, very polite and keep my mouth shut.

With anything, I think half the battle is finding a cool dealer and having a good relationship with them. Why is this so important?

You have an engine problem and are going to be complaining about a driveline problem (the diff). You might want to give this a quick read through:

GM Voiding Warranties Due to Aftermarket Tunes

Good luck, and let us know what happened.

Per the instructions on the can, I only poured in half a can, not the whole thing, and yes, I was skeptical about doing it myself, however, the alternative, doing nothing seemed worse.

I have previously informed them about the rear whining and asked that they look into it, he was going to search for a TSB on it but never called me. I am sure I could dig up enough posts with something to support it.

Turns out I am dropping the car off on Fri not today. I have a call into Jeremy and awaiting a response from him.

Regarding the upgrades, I was only asking if there was a better alternative that I could pay the difference on if I upgraded to a better unit, ala LS7 or whatever. I am not up on the latest designs, technology improvements whatever. I am not looking to pull one over on anyone and get something for free, even though they will honor the car out of it's time warranty. I drive the car very mildly. I am what you would call mechanically sympathetic, so I don't beat on it.

I did confirm in my phone call to the Service Writer this morning that they will be fixing it, whatever it is at no cost to me, likely stock replacement parts. So that's the good news.

I will stay after I drop it off when they drain using a paper funnel to catch and see if there is any metal in the motor. I'll likely bring along and donate the oil and filter for the refill, as I already have them.

Will let you know what transpires from there.

Cool...hope they get it taken care of you. FWIW, LS7 lifters = LS2 lifters. I was primarily referring to the caddy racing lifters and cam upgrade.

I just went through another 10 pages of posts and have since learned what you just told me, LS2 = LS7. I did speak with Jeremy this morning, he will be in the local area this Fri, return the car to stock ECM specs and we'll go from there, dropping the car off afterwards or Sat AM.

I do really want to be there for the oil drain and or valve cover removal however, so hopefully Fri late PM this will happen. If so I will have my camera there to take pics.
