Have you ever traded in a highly modified vehicle?
I've had my 2004 procharged YJ GTO up for sale for nearly a month now with no interest. Ultimately, I want to trade in my 2002 Impala and 2004 GTO on a 2008 G8 GT (auto ftw). Do you think a dealership would even consider this? I'm going to call around soon but wanted to hear some stories first
I would strip it down to stock if i were you. Sell the parts seperately. I don't think a dealer would do it straight up, but throw in a little cash and you should be ok. Good Luck
F
Uhhh, you know that its 2009 right? Only 40 days till 2010? Better trade in that thing quick!
P to the smurfin' S, Pontiac is dead, better hurry!
Good Luck!

Oh, and to answer your actual question, I traded my 2004 Silverado for my GTO, it had a sweet Canadian made aftermarket performace muffler (25hp) and a no window cap. Got 3k over book.
I traded a 18 month old Focus ZX3 for the Silverado, It had a really nice aftermarket exhaust on it and 15k miles, got 5k .
I got you all beat. Back when I originally purchased my GTO, guess what I traded in on it? My wife's 03 Cyber Green VW Beetle! She just got tired of it, and wanted to have my Jeep. We paid 22K for that damn thing, and I let it go for 14K after she owned it less than 2 years.

Dealers are going to want nothing to do with that car. When someone sees a modified car, especially one with some form of forced induction installed, they automatically think it was beat on and the owner dumped it because it was giving them problems. Not a single person will think the owner just wanted to move on to something else.

Yep.
One of the things that was drummed into me early on was "Never buy someone else's race car." True or not, that's the prevailing mindset out there.

I traded my modded 01 Mustang GT in on my old Lightning. It had a O/R h-pipe, catback, 3:73 gears, pulleys, cai, aftermarket rear lower control arms, caster camber plates, FRPP lowering springs, aftermarket front rotors and calipers, MM tie rod ends, adjustable clutch set up, aluminum driveshaft, shifter, 5" inch tach , timing adjuster etc,etc,etc.... Oh and it had a 125hp NOS kit on it.
The only thing they raised a eye at was the kit. I pulled it off and sold it. They gave me a little more on my trade for the mods, but not much. They(dealership) also ask if anyone that came to look at it could call me and ask questions about it. A guy called 2 days later and bought it the next day. He payed 5k over what I got out of it. I even told him what they gave me to help him negotiate.
My advice would be to take of and sell what you can before you trade it.
Yeah, I had an '01 Alero (bought brand spakin new) and traded it in for 500 bucks in '05. It was the biggest lemon on EARTH.

LOL, if you get FI and you don't beat on it then I'd call bullshit.

Hell I traded in my 2000 Grand Prix in on my 2004 GTO.
The grandprix had an engine swap, trans swap, supercharged, intercooled, stripped down, exhaust had no cats, hell everything minus the outside body was different. The thing had the nastiest cam in it as well and was LOUD as all hell. They still took it, no questions asked. I even tried telling them all the things that were not street legal about it and they didn't care.
Depends how bad the dealer wants the sale.

I had an '00 Alero traded for GTO in Dec 03 for $8K plus loyalty. Car never gave me a lick of trouble.
You lucked out on the trade in. My a/c wasn't working and had about 5 cels. I think it was leaking water in the oil. Dipstick was milky. I have a list of problems on that POS. I see why they went under.
And to top it off it had no stick for the tranny fluid. Manual said there's only one reason why you should have to check it and that's if you notice a leak. And if you do take it to the Stealership.

The G8's are the same way, FWIW.

Actually, I got beat up. My car was fully loaded w/ leather, sport suspension, top stereo, sunroof, spoiler, wheels, etc, and had only 28K Mi. and fresh brakes. You could eat off the motor. They had the car sold same day I brought it in. Had I waited until the spring 04 fire sale, I could have kept the Alero.
As for the water/oil mix, blame Chevrolet, not Oldsmobile. Virtually every 2.8/3.1/3.4 60 degree V6 ever made develops leaks in the intake manifold sooner or later. It is erroneously blamed on Dexcool, but it was just a bad design with O ring retained by a plastic form that cracks and fails. The replacements are stainless / neoprene.
I 've traded two modified cars, and told the dealer exactly how they were modified. They could care less as they will just take the cars straight to auction.
If you're worried that it may be an issue, take the car to another dealer and ask them if they would take a modified car for a trade in

Pez candy just traded in his gto. It has a 403 stroker, and a 76mm sts rear mount turbo, along with some other things. Needless to say it was modded, and the dealer took it.

I did well when I traded my 99 GTP for the GTO. My GTP had: cam/valve train upgrades/headers/exhaust/modular pulley system/suspension/brakes/cai/aftermarket hood and tuned. The car was never at the track, and I wrote down a detailed list of exactly what parts they were. Everything was installed by me, and I showed the dealer on the internet that I was a licensed installer for the products.
The dealer put out some calls to see if anyone local would be interested. One of the mechanics in back started a bidding war with two other people in the area when they heard my car would be up for sale. The dealer gave me more money than I expected, and the GTO was more than affordable.

Is it actually cost effective to demod? I wouldn't be able to do the work myself since I don't have many tools at my current house and the biggest issue is that I don't have any stock parts to fill in the gaps it would leave behind.
Then after all that's done, I'd probably only get maybe 3k for everything? It's really not worth it to me for all that additional time spent.

If you are planning on bringing it back to PA I am interested on making a deal on the parts.
Think about it though, you are not going to get 3k more in trade for the goat because it has a procharger on it.
