4.8L home made turbo/ GTO goes 10.75 @ 135MPH

this is kind of old.
my 4.8 GTO went 10.75 @ 135mph. 106 MPH in the 1/8th

full weight, stock trans, stock 4.8 besides valve springs/pushrods and a LS9 cam.
4000lbs race weight.

made 582whp running a little lean through the 4l65 and 3600 stall unlocked. 16-17psi

will be getting a built 4L65 with a triple disc converter built for the boost with a cam specd for my turbo setup.
lets see how much it picks up from the current setup

mods:
2008 4.8L
ls9 cam
ebay EMUSA 38mm wastegate
ebay EMUSA 50mm BOV
2.5 inch ebay intercooler piping
ebay, 31x12x4 intercooler
lunati valve springs/comp push rods
ebay GT45 turbo
home made turbo kit
80lb injectors/ dual walbros/return. E85
3600 stall built for nitrous (for my old setup)

oh wow, nice, love these custom builds!

Q, why 4.8? Because iron block?

Cool, seems to be a viable option for a drag car. More pics of the crossover piping from right left bank?

its really a mild setup right now.
im throwing a turbo cam specd by Martin @ tick performance .
it should pick up some power and help maximize the potential of this 70mm turbo.

Aye, at 17psi you're probably not even running in its efficiency zone yet. Gotta check out a compressor map and see what it is, but then again, stock bottom end can only put up with so much.

this is the gen 4 4.8 which has the ls2 style rods. which are strong and have been proven to handle 8-900hp. the weak link is the pistons, but keep the timing conservative and good fuel in it and it'll live.
thats why i went with E85. gota keep those pistons in 1 piece. lol..

the turbo specs are 69mm compressor, 77mm turbine 1.05 AR twin scroll

yea that was with the older style rods.

the older style rods have been proven to start bending around 650whp, the ls2 style rods will handle 200hp more.

BTW, this motor only has 12k miles. so its pretty much new

That's impressive man! If mine ever goes pop, builds like this definitely raise thoughts to make me do the same thing, rather than forge and stroke. It'll keep some serious $$$ in my pocket

The more research I do the more it seems like the smaller LS engines are just better suited for big boost appications. Nice build man and looks good !

its not that smaller engines are better for boost, is that its alot cheaper.

No no don't get me wrong I don't mean to sound like w interweb newb, lol,I should have been less vague in my reply. What I mean is given the smaller stroke it has some neat advantages when considering piston speed. Also, one could argue several other efficiency advantages as well is all.

That is a awesome build man!! I have always wanted a single 88mm, but I lack the skills needed to make it. Congrats, and I can't wait to see what it does with the new cam & trans.

i have always wanted to build a high reving 4.8L LS. I love the sound of small displacment V8's. Like the toyota 4.0L 1UZFE engine. Ill never forget the first time hearing a 4.0L V8 turning 9000 RPM. Very cool build and i can appreciate what you did there by dropping 1.8L out of your car because of your budget, and you still made it work. +1

This is an iron block I'm assuming (I don't know if they made an aluminum 4.8L)?

Nice numbers... how much do you think you have in the build altogether?

Did you mig or tig the hot side together?

There's been several guys talk about going this route with smaller displacement, but I think this is the first small displacement GTO build I've seen that ran and had numbers.
