HeadlightArmor Follow-up to yesterday's Nite-Shade post. Taillights pictured, but the same differences go for headlights too.

Typical taillight spray painted with Nite-Shades (not wet sanded, polished and clear coated).

Typical Headlight Armor Stealth Smoke Taillight Film application. Not only does it look better, it is a lot easier to get the look, and loads easier to return to stock.

Winner for sure.

HeadlightArmor Siliev, 2-3 years is ages long to wait... The applications are aimed at being installed when you get them. Our mater rolls (along with most rolled stock of paint protection, sign and vehicle graphics materials) should really be used within a year of production. Once cut into ready to apply form they are going to get harder and harder to apply as time goes on.

If you have been sitting on them for years, I would go ahead and at least give them a try. They may be hard to put on but what's the worse that can happen.. Sit them in the summer sun for a little while to soften up prior to application - the suns rays should soften / make them a bit more compliant. Good luck.

Siliev So, I purchased a headlight and fog light protection kit for my car about 2-3 years ago. Long story short, I never ended up installing it but still have the kit which has been kept indoors at room temperature the entire time.

Would you say it is still good to install?

HeadlightArmor Tuesday thought. The downside of spray painting your lights.
While at a local speed shop shooting a new install video there was a car in for a pre purchase inspection. All of its lights were painted with what looked like VHT Nite-Shades. They looked home sprayed and not polished or cleared as they were a dull matte finish.

The person who brought the vehicle in knew it might not pass the state inspection as all lights looked nearly completely black… He asked if the paint could be removed safely as the person who he was buying the vehicle from said, “sure no problem” but was uninterested in removing it prior to delivery.

The person who brought the vehicle in asked us for our thoughts. We sent him to the VHT site where right on the product description is stated “Warning: Once applied to a plastic lens, VHT Nite-Shades™ cannot be satisfactorily removed.” He got back on his phone and started looking for removal vids. Found a few using brake cleaner…. We said maybe, we have never tried it but would exercise caution as brake cleaner is not good for paint and could damage the plastic lenses. Safest bet was to factor in the cost of complete light housing replacements in the offer to purchase the car.

Fast forward a few weeks. The person did buy the car at a slightly reduced price. He was able to strip the taillights without any short term damage (it is unknown if the plastic is weakened). The headlights, complete disaster. The previous owner had sanded down the headlight prior to painting and when the solvent was used to remove the spray the underlying light was completely frosted over and opaque. He then spent the following day refinishing the headlight and clearing them with a Sylvania system. The vehicle does have a history of spider cracking of the lens so who knows how long they will survive…

If the original owner had used Headlight Armor’s adhesive backed lighting protection applications the removal would have been much more straight forward. Removal of Headlight Armor: Start by warming the material a bit with a hairdryer and then pick at a corner with your fingers and then slowly peel off - making sure to hold onto the light firmly during the process. You may or may not have left over adhesive on the lens. Leftover adhesive can be rubbed off or carefully removed with an adhesive cleaner.

HeadlightArmor Welcome to the first official weekend of Summer 2019! Starting off hot here in TX, 95 with a low 100's heat index for the last couple of days... Closed out the week with a flurry of activity! All orders in by 2PM CDT on Friday shipped Friday! All weekend orders do usually ship out on Monday's

A cool customer shot by a lake to cool you off / get you thinking of summer in earnest.

As a reminder when the weather is hot it is important not to overheat the materials and adhesive when applying your lighting protection films. In most cases ambient temp should be enough to apply the bulk of the lighting application. You should really only need some additional heat along the edge to soften, dry and set. Cold water in your spray bottle helps once it gets really hot.

If you have any questions about the application in the summer please let us know. Hope you have a great weekend!

HeadlightArmor We have heard similar experiences with spyder headlights with different applications. Even OE lights can have similar issues. A lot of current Porsche's and C6 Corvette's etc can have similar issues.

The factory coating may fail with or without protecting the surface. Though the film will tend to hold things together longer than if nothing were there. Keep in mind though if the oe coating fails and when the film is removed down the road the adhesive will pull off any loose areas.

As for alternative headlights, sorry don't have any other suggestions.

DangerNoodle This is my understanding:
GTO headlights = 3 choices
• OEM = Best but expensive if new / good condition
• Spyder = Not horrible, but not great.
• Dorman = Well, I'm glad there's more options, but not these.

Sadly my OEM headlights were beyond saving and I ended up buying the Spyder headlights (back in 2015). The 1st year they weren't horrible. I actually began to like them despite their "cheap" styling / materials. A year later whatever "protective coating" that was on them began peeling. Once it all peeled off the lights began to yellow a bit, but I figure I would restore them, no big deal. Unfortunately something dripped on them recently and ate into the plastic, so now I'm smurfed.

Long story short, if I bought new Spyder headlights. Can your product be applied to these despite whatever protective coating is already on them?

Annnd by chance do you know of another option of headlight assemblies for the GTO?
