Help me identify this engine? LS7?

4 Attachment(s)
I just ran across this 06 GTO for sale a couple hours from me. Looking at the pictures I spotted a tag on the back of the car saying LS7 7.0 liter.

Before I drive 3 hours to look at it, can any of you guys possible identify or confirm from a picture if this is actually an LS7? Or is it factory with a badge someone put on the car? I know this might not be possible, but I don't know enough about them to tell by looking and figured here might be worth a shot.

btw, It has 75k miles and he's asking $16,500. Worth it?

LS3goatee 06-07-2019 12:09 PM

Well, that indeed is a LS7 intake. So there is that. Message the actual seller and I'm sure he/she will have more photos and info for you.

I called. He didn't seem to know anything about the car. It's on a car lot, so I didn't want to tip the guy off that it may be something special. You think it's worth $16,5 with a LS7 swap? The inside is super clean too.

Ah, i'm the wrong one to ask. I rather buy one half (or less) that price in full, and spend a couple grand on a power adder and an extra grand fixing deficiencies. Its what I did with my goat.

I gotcha. Kind of what I had in mind. I had a buddy a few years back that cloned a 3 part upgrade on an 06 GTO he saw in one of the bigger named magazines. I can't remember all the details, but I know he did some head work, a cam, and a pro charger, suspension, brakes etc... He was only running 7lbs of boost and I was impressed. Been wanting one every since.

flowmastagoat 06-08-2019 07:08 AM

A used LS7 engine alone seems to go for over 10k.

Tig321 06-08-2019 11:42 AM

Exactly.. On Ebay they range from 11 to 15k pull outs from wrecks. Hell it's like 540hp stock! I've been wanting to do a procharger build on a GTO for years, but this LS7 is already a little over 11:1 compression I think. I don't know if it can handle any power adders at that much compression already.

LS3goatee 06-08-2019 12:41 PM

Just cheaper to exceed that HP range by buying a stock GTO and boosting it. If something goes wrong with the LS7, it also is more expensive to repair/replace. Just my $0.02. Instead of buying a GTO for 17-18k when its all said and done (at dealer? taxes, tag, title...), buy a decent one less than half of that, power adder, and you've now made it faster for the total price of a used LS7! A couple grand more you can find a CTSV private party...

Nothubertjfarnsworth 06-09-2019 07:41 AM

you can get a ton more power by doing heads and cam on an ls7 than any stock block engine that came with the GTO. you don't need to do boost.

LS7 Z06's run 9's with heads and cam and get 600+ whp.

if it is, keep it. that thing will be a monster if you mod it.

the only thing i would worry about is the valve seat eccentricity. but, if you do the heads, you should have that covered anyhow.

itslow 06-09-2019 02:33 PM

There have been a number of GTOs with LS7 swaps. It appears this is one of them.

Logan71 06-10-2019 09:25 AM

I always worry that someone has beat on a modded car that's on a car lot, but I guess the same could be said of a stock one, but I digress. I wish you luck going over it with a fine tooth comb, if possible.

That paint job - sigh - looks like the love child of a police car and a PBM GTO.

An $8-9k GTO is no where near what I would call "decent". A GTO going for that much (or little) is going to be ragged out and most likely in need of a LOT of TLC.

I was actually kind of thinking the same thing. It's already 11.1 compression.... What can you do with it that won't cost a fortune?

Logan71.... Yea, I wasn't too crazy about the color myself.

Bad news is... I couldn't convince my girlfriend to get up at the crack of dawn to go look at it on Saturday. It got a little heated. lol Around noon I finally talked her into driving 3 hours to look at it. Just before we walked out the door, the guy from the car lot called to tell me he had just sold it. Had I convinced her to go that morning, I'd have been there 2 hours before it was bought!!!

We haven't talked much since Saturday :-/

Why does your girlfriend need to go with you to look at a car? Is she paying your bills?

No lol We were planning on staying In Dallas for the weekend if we were going to drive all the way there considering I can't drive 2 vehicles home... 6 1/2 hours driving round trip.. I wasn't going just to look.

Not getting in a pissing match but I've seen my fair share of decent GTOs in that price range. Lots of TLC range are the 4-7k range IMO, and I know because I bought one lol and I still spent a hell of a lot less than 10k to get my GTO to where it is now (including cost of the buying the GTO)!

Sacrifice 06-12-2019 10:02 AM

I paid 8 for my 06 w/95k on it. Granted its had body damage before but overall just standard gto issues.

LS2-GTO 06-12-2019 10:32 AM

$27,900 in '06.

blwnls1 06-12-2019 11:41 AM

Where you guys find these prices, I just don't know. haha.

Even JY Engines are overpriced.

Here's a link of GTO's available on Auto Trader 500 mile search area. Look at the prices!

blwnls1 06-12-2019 11:46 AM

Also,
I'd consider that car.

Especially if it has more modes like suspension and the needed bushings. Ask lot's of questions about the engine. Was it a donor? There are LOTS of GM LS7 replacements and many of these ended up being repaired or sold as-is.

Go on the 04-06 GTO Trade and Sell facebook page, or craigslist. Auction even.

All factory LS7's are hand built and have a built by name tag at the rear of the intake on the passenger side. I suppose it could have been removed though. .
