it's pretty much the same procedure as replacing the rear wheel bearing.

What I thought was outer stub play is actually rotational play in the axle CV joints. I will try to attach a video link. Seems like a lot for basically brand new axles?

what brand axles are they? you said basically new, so are they actually a little used?

the CV joints can have SOME play, even when new. There are tolerances in the balls, cages, and races that add up. As well, there are a few different manufacturers as well as versions of the various components found the 108mm CV's we use on our cars, as they are common in other IRS cars, dunebuggies, and other motorsport apps.

The wear i've noticed in the CV joints is the balls digging what look like large brinnel marks in the grooves of the outer race, where they endure the highest load under power. I think this ends up creating a more of the type of play you see in your vid.

I installed them brand new about 3 months ago. They are GForce anti-wheel hop, Level 2 IIRC. Maybe 3K miles and only 3 drag strip passes. Both left and right appear to have the same rotational play. No radial play.

OK thanks, its just that I see this as a primary source of my clunking. The diff seems pretty tight still. The tranny is a little sloppy too.

Manual transmission? They are always quite loose (and not just in GTOs). Not abnormal there.

Personally, if I upgrade my adjusters and inner stubs it won't be to try to eliminate the clunking, just to have better pieces in there (GForce adjusters have larger bearings which I like). If they eliminate the clunking I'd be thrilled, just don't think they would at this point. At this point I'm assuming the clunking I have is typical healthy GTO, just that the sound is exaggerated due to poly cradle bushings, Harrop rear cover, Koni shocks, Lovell springs and Spohn toe rods with spherical rod ends at one end each. I mean, 20k miles ago it made these same sounds before I added all these pieces, it just became more noticeable as I added improvements.

In essence I've been chasing a ghost for 9 years now.

Yup, manual tranny. I expect my clunking to get worse with the 3.91 gear swap but I agree, its not an issue. I just need to get used to it.

in my experience, clunks come from odd places.

like cracked spider gears.

worn shock mounts allowing the rods to pop

i have had worn cv joints produce a clunk, and in the trash they went.

dangernoodle had a loose diff to xmember bolt

i've had problems with exhaust pipes slapping the underbody in the 04, which needed some poly engine mounts to fix

etc.

sometimes i think if i left the cars stock and babied them, they'd never make odd noises. but, they can be found and fixed. it's not always the obvious places.

Someone the other day suggested checking the diff to crossmember bolts and I plan to check mine, but everything else has checked out. Repeatedly.

I mean, it makes no noises when even lightly cruising, none on acceleration or deceleration so I'm calling it good. Everything in the suspension is new except for the trailing arm bushings and they checked out as good and I would think if they had issues it would be evident at accel or decel. No weird tire wear (other than the rears appear to be wearing faster than the fronts!).

On my 69 Chevy pickup at one time I got a weird clunk when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse. I had had trouble with the carrier bearing in the driveshaft so I checked it out real well, was in fine shape. BUT, I found that one of the u-joints had seized and the joint was working it's way through the cast steel yoke, surprised it didn't fly apart. I had just towed my show car home from a show that day, a 100 mile round trip, could have been ugly.

Anway, had to replace half of the driveshaft as the yoke was seriously damaged. Weird thing was, it made no noise at all while driving, only a clunk when shifting into gear or from Drive to Reverse.

In a way I wish something would pop up on the GTO that is that obvious so I could just fix it and be done with it. I just have to live with the fact that there isn't anything wrong with the GTO.

From Day 1 my GTO clanged and clunked. :gto_rage:

I learned to manipulate the clutch to alleviate the noise and have driven it that way ever since.
