I had this issue as well. Used a steel rod, and had to grind down one side in order for the rod to fully insert. Also, slather on assembly lube. I did not have to use a hammer or mallet to insert.

Great job! The only item that might be another nice touch would be to paint the red battery cover either BOM or black. Also, really like the coil pack covers -those are sharp.
