The finish on my steering wheels controls is flaking off on one side, so I'm having them replaced under warranty. If the '06 illuminated ones will plug-n-play on the '05 and work like they're supposed to, then I'm gonna do that. Not really a big deal if it won't happen. I don't need the lights...it's all second nature by now anyway....just thought it would be cool.

Has anyone done this yet?

I have a GTO electronics expert looking into this for me, but if he can't come up with a definitive answer, and if no-one here can either, then I'm going to order them anyway and find out for sure.... :)

I'm really interested in the outcome of that too....

Read somewhere on this forum that "the leds/places for the leds" are there in the steering wheel, but there are no power leads/plug-ins..... :bomb:

Yeah I searched the topic quite a bit, and read comments like that, but nothing definitive. I think it was just speculation more than anything. I also read posts saying it should work because of the Aussie VZ.....But yeah, we're gonna find out for sure.

Actually...........the part # is 92148381 for the 2006 controls. The prices are right, though. :)

Both sets of buttons are connected to each other by a harness then there is
a connector on the end. Unless there is something different about the
connector on the 06, I cant see why they wouldnt work. There may be
an extra wire going thru the harness for power to the lights, but I doubt it.

EDIT: The connector I pulled out of a steering wheel I have, has a black
square connector with 4 prongs in it, yet there is room for 4 more prongs.
Maybe there is another prong to supply extra power? I would think not,
but if you ask the parts guy to see it first, maybe that will help.

Wait a minute.... this plug goes into the back of the stereo correct? Or does it plug in somewhere else? I haven't pulled the stereo yet ( not a reason to do so yet)

If it does, then the stereo would have to be different then the 04/05 or else it has to work.

If it plugs into the wirring harness of the car then we still don't know.

I'm a parts manager at a Pontiac dealership.

I could just order it and try it, but I don't want to eat up return allowance in case I have to send it back.....unless it's a last resort.

I was kinda hoping either someone could say, "Yeah, I tried it and it works," or, "Yeah, I tried it and it didn't work" before I pull the trigger on it.

The harness is short and plugs in at the steering wheel connection point...

EDIT: Ok I looked at again, there is one green and one red wire, obviously power
and ground and the the other two prongs are for the controls. So as long as
there is only 4 prongs on the connector of the new one, you should be good to go.

The other side of at least the controls has to be input into the stereo, only way to control it.

The stereo might supply the power also. That's what I was thinking about.

Definitely NOT plug and play. Extra wires need to be run and the simply don't exist in the rotary coupling (that thing that sits between the steering column and the back of the wheel that gets the electrical connections through the rotating shaft into the wheel itself.) :(

Then, you'll need to modify the harness itself for the new wires.

If you ever want to get rid of the Lighted Controls i'd like first dibs. ;)
