If I was standing a few feet away from you, and just called out your name, would you hear the sound of my voice more quickly if there was nothing between us (except air, of course), water between us, or a solid wall between us? And yes, my voice will be able to travel through all of the above.

Answer: The solid wall. Sound waves are transmitted through molecules/particles. There are more molecules/particles, closer together, in a solid than a liquid or gas, so the sound would carry faster. Conversely, if sound waves were passed through a vacuum there would be no sound. There are no molecules/particles in a vacuum, and therefore nothing to carry sound waves.
