Question: Why is this car sitting!?

Details:
Brand New 2003 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra
Limited 10th Anniversary Edition
Only 2003 made!
Fully loaded with deluxe interior

$7,900 BELOW sticker!!!

Answer: Because it's an antiquated piece of *hit which will become the new poster child for depreciation.

Wonder why Ford's stock is in the tank and GM is trading north of $52? One car maker has a new fire, momentum and direction. The other, nada.

MSRP - $40,900
Sell - $33,000

Supposedly dealer cost is nearly $38,000. Talk about taking a hit.

Same dealer has 2 more without the 10th year anniversary package for $32,000. He literally can't give them away.
Boy, I'm not gonna get into this battle! :D
Well I dont know about the POS part but most guys that bought a Cobra or Mach at the beginning of the year got screwed hard.

Last year the Mach guys were where you all are right now....waiting. And when the cars came they all paid over sticker for them. No rebates either. Oh and they were building 6500 too...limited edition....

Well fast forward to now...Rebate of 4 grand...dealer selling at invoice less hold back. My buddy paid 34k for a Mach...I paid less than 23k....Talk about getting killed

Oh and at the end of the year turns out they popped out about 3000 more right at the end of the year...so almost 10000 were built.

Now I wont get into the GM vs. Ford vs. Mopar battle...I may have a Mach 1 but I get to drive a 9C1 Caprice with the LT1 at work daily....nothing like turning on the lights and siren and feeling that good ol GM engine cut loose...Crown Vic....never!
I also think it has a lot to do with many mustang guys can go pick up a regular GT for dirt cheap, throw a sh*tload of mods onto it and still be ahead both powerwise and $$$ than buying a Cobra.

But that's just a guess.
The same reason I have 6 C-5 Vettes on my lot, everyone's waiting for the C-6.

Might be a good time to buy a C5, yes? You did say you actually have them on your lot, not in transit, stuck on a broke train or anything else of the like. Right? :D

They are all holding out for the new sweet 05 Mustang

Wow, that looks pretty good. A lot better than the car at the NAIA last year.
The Mach 1 is nothing more than a modded Mustang. On the road it looks like the 10 million other mustangs out there. It has little to set itself apart from the stock mustang, mustang GT and cobra. Why pay big money for it. The same reason people are holding out for the 05 Mustang, which I am sure will be mass produced is the reason we want GTO's, Only our cars will not be mass produced POS.
I think the new mustang look is a big mistake. It's not that hard to buy a '71 mustang. I think the 'retro' styling may actually be the beginning of the end for the 'stang...
hey guys, newbie here on the GTO forums, I agree it's because of the 05 and that car does look insane! If GM had done the same for the firebirds and camaros, well it would be a different story. I just wish that GM wouldve done the GTO a little better in the looks dept. The performance is great but the looks are lukewarm.:D

I agree. The GTOs exterior styling is its weakest point.

Wow, what a difference two days can make......

"I've had one on order now for over 5 months and will probably not see it for another 3 months. It's definitely a great car but I never expected to wait 8 months total. It gets harder and harder to justify this when a 2003 Mustang SVT Limited Edition (2003 made)Convertible Cobra can be had for $33,000. Yes it's an old design, but it has 390 ponies and it's a convertible."

well said!

The GTO Should've launched with the 400 HP LS6 and really kicked A*S
One problem with GM is the always seem to follow except with the corvette, they need to use the old addage "lead follow or get out of the way!" LOL:p
Didn't Lee Iacocca say that when he was at Chrysler? Or swipe it from somebody else.
Davbo,

Definitely! As with others, I've had to endure the ridicule of ordering a car and waiting 8 months to receive it with little credible communication from Pontiac or GM. I took everything off the table and just looked at car vs. car. $33,000, 390 horses, convertible, only 2,003 made. I must admit, knowing I could buy the Cobra tomorrow and enjoy it now vs. the not knowing of the GTO is very seductive. I'm wrestling with this daily. I may have to pull my order. Sad really. I've never owned a Ford.

:(
The cobra has all that to offer and is nearly 8K below sticker and they still are having problems selling it. That is telling you something. Wait for your GTO and you will be pleased. The cobra might go straight faster but when it comes to a roomy and comfortable interior and handling on the road that actually has bends and turns you cannot go wrong. It handles like a Beemer and the interior is as comfortable. If you are over 6' tall the cobra is much to small.
There's no question that the GTO is a fine automobile (when/if it ever arrives), but there is also no question that the Cobra is an animal with 390 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 390 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3,500 rpm. You want to talk about a torque monster.....
