Cams

I couldn't find a FAQ on cams. Trying to learn what all the numbers mean, referring to:

231/234 .643"/.598" 111 LSA

Are the cams in LS1's and LS2's interchangable? From what I can tell they are.

It sounds like you lose some gas milage as you go larger on cams, but can you go with a mild cam and see any worthwhile gains without a huge drop in mileage?

Anyways, just trying to learn about cams. Not thinking about getting one until the warranty is gone though, so a couple years.

I picked up power with my AFR205 and flowtech 216/220 camshaft (397rwhp - was 329 with LTs). My mileage also improved, had a good tune to match the setup.

I understand mileage imrpoved LTs and 397rwhp. The rest of it has me going "huh?"
theres a nice Cam FAQ @ ls1tech under the ls1 forum, in a sticky, but its real slow right now, ill post it later.
put it this way, a cam has less influcence on mileage than the tune of the car, or your foot. even with the maggie and the cam I have, im still averaging the same per tank as I did stock +/- 1mpg

heres a good FAQ

More than likely that camshaft will have overlap (Intake and exhaust value open at the same time). This means some of the fresh air/fuel will be going out the exhaust during the overlap. Even with a perfect tune, you will see a decrease in average mileage when you get into larger cams and overlap.
only at idle and low rpms when reversion can occur. at cruise rpms it should be ok. but youre right, that Cam would eat up some gas at lower rpms.
10.5 deg overlap @ .050
That was just a thing I found to copy and paste for an example. Thanks for the info.
