I can't wholely impart to anyone who has not had it happen to them, exactly how bad it sucks for one little spring to cause your whole engine to be scrapped. It happened to me. Even killed the cam and heads (the valve was Excalibur-ed through it).

You guys are super lucky here.

After my incident I would never run a set of single springs - doubles are well, well worth the peace of mind.

well i'm digging this thread back up as well. my 04 just died on me while cruising at 40mph. it was actually still running but shaking violently and clearly missing. shut it down right away and towed it to the house. started it up and the 2 back cylinders on both sides are dead. i have fuel but i haven't checked for spark yet. now after seeing this thread i have a sick feeling it's a broken spring like the other 2 guys. they are pac 1518's with 8,000 easy miles on them. this sucks :(

Sounds like broke spring to me. Do what I did ... I stuck a stocker on there, for about 2K miles, until I pulled the heads for the L92 swap. Not overly impressed with PAC quality (seeing how many LSx guys have experienced broken springs).

Just order some double valve springs.
the idea behind my valvetrain was a light weight, well controlled setup. springs were shimmed, preload set right, light weight retainers, ect.. car never saw above 3000rpm for the first 15 min of driving either. if it is a broken spring( which it sound like it is) i'm at a loss for a reason

I had a 1518 break also. I put them in for the same exact reasons you did: lightweight and good control.

They are crap. Get them out of your engine and put some dual springs in there.

well it is a broken spring:bomb:. i guess i'm blessed that the valve didn't drop. the locks and retainer stayed put and it appears the valve isn't bent at first glance. now i need to decide if i'm pulling the head to verify or just swapping springs. i'm running the hollow/sodium filled valves so i'm not sure if a dual spring is an option without changing to a solid valve. when searching old posts it appears that the heads pop off with high spring pressures. definitely need some advice from the pro's i think

Never heard of that before.......

I just had a hollow stem valve break in half and take out my brand new stroker motor. They are unbelievably thin and flimsy. You should take them out as well.

Search the last few pages of my thread "Project Daedelus" to see what happens when a hollow stem valve breaks. You won't believe how thin the walls are. About the thickness of a dime.

I have a 1998 trans am with a built 6.0 ls motor and I'm experiencing the exact same problem the last 4 cylinders are not firing 5,6,7, and 8. It happened abruptly I was driving and then suddenly the motor started running very poorly. I got it home and checked the coils and injectors they all seem to be working properly. The car is at the shop now and they are confused because the motor has compression, spark, and gas. They also checked for wiring ground and vacuum irregularities but found none. Do you think perhaps I may have a broken valve spring as well or a related issue? I really appreciate any helpful comments as this issue has been a nightmare.

Only way to find out is to pull the valve covers and take a look.

I have the exact same problem with my last 4 cylinders as well, did you pull the valve covers to find out, if so what did it reveal?
