Clutch Rebuild Recommendations

280 Views 16 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Rich-Tripower
I have a 2005 GTO

It has headers
upgraded cam (not sure what level, but probably a stage 2, as the previous owner didn't have that information)
K&N cold air intake
possible tune?

I am replacing the clutch, slave cylinder, and flywheel. I have searched all around and the price is all over the place. I figured I would need something to withstand about 550 HP after all the mods that had been done to it?
Heard good things about monster, mcleod, but was a little on the pricey side for me. Is ACT good? that was from the summit racing site. Then seen some on ebay through fx racing for around $300 is that good? website seemed to have some bad reviews.
I have also priced clutch kits at Auto Zone and O'reilly but i believe those are factory ones and i don't think those would hold up?

The car still has a two piece drive shaft if that is of help.

Any advice or opinion is helpful. I Can post a picture of the Clutch assembly if it helps anyone.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry I didn't specify, it is for a 6sp manual.
A stock type clutch like the Luk ls7 will be more than enough. Especially running a horrid k&n intake.
If you wonna buy something fancy, any of them will work. Any stage monster, twin or single.

Have you had personal experience with that brand and model?

Clearly if you need a clutch…

The LUK “LS7” clutch will most likely fit the bill with your cost and HP situation.

I have not but it will be the clutch I go to when I eventually do a heads and cam swap on my car. It is factory rated at 500 HP so with a little wiggle room, it can probably hold a little more, but not a lot more. If it works well enough on a C6 Z06, it will work well on a stock to average modified GTO. Lots of people have upgraded to it with very few complaints on it. Search the forum for it and you will get a lot of info on it. For bang for the buck it is a good deal.
I havent ran a luk myself. Dont care much for stock options with an actually modded car.
Ran a Monster stage 1 and stage 3. And Currently on my second Mcleod RXT.

you don't make close to 550 horsepower with those mods alone, so you don't need a clutch that holds that much. unless there are mods you aren't telling us about...

as was said, the luk LS7 clutch and flywheel is adequate.

if you want room to grow, the monster twin disk clutches are amazing and hold plenty of power, and have stock engagement effort.
Twin disc is probably overkill and a lot more expensive. The Monster Series S has a very stock feel, slightly heavier pedal and work really well up to 550 rwhp. I have them in both my cars and they get a fair amount of abuse and have never let me down. The engagement is smooth and chatter free.

The LS7 clutch works for many, but it is a very heavy unit all told. Pretty cost effective though.
thanks all this really helps!

just get everything here and it will match up just fine. Flywheel and everything. it's a direct swap.
The LS7 clutch worked fine for me when I had headers, but once I added a camshaft, it began slipping at higher RPMs. I was at 430 RWHP at that time. While the Monster and McLeod clutches are more expensive, I would recommend going that route because the last thing you want to do is spend money on a cheaper clutch, have it fail, and then have to spend money on the more expensive clutch.

Try to avoid how I describe the mentality of people at work: "Never the money to do it right. Always the money to do it twice."

+11ty.
My Monster stage two was an awesome clutch. I was at 503rwhp and ran dozens of 11.3x with it leaving at 5500rpm on slicks with 1.57 60fts. Only reason I replaced it was the new stroker engine will exceed its rating.
Im sure the LS7 clutch will serve you well but I believe the level two is a more capable clutch for our heavier cars. The LS7 clutch was originally designed for the lighter vette.
