With the deep aftermarket transmission pans like B & M what trans filter should we use? OEM filter and dipstick also?

How deep are they? Isn't the filter the pickup? I did a partial fluid change on my OBS 4l60 a couple weeks ago, it has the factory "deep pan" so that's the filter I ordered. When I got in there I found that the previous owner has installed a shallow filter last time. At first I freaked out because I thought I got the wrong one but when I put the old one back in it sat at a weird angle. But the new one for deep pans was nice and parallel, measured the same distance from the mating surface as the pan, etc.

Point being yeah I think it does matter for the filter, but I would think you want the same level of fluid so shouldn't matter for the dipstick? Idk, the benefit of having extra fluid shouldn't matter if the pickup isn't as deep, but I also think the filter I got was thicker (and therefore had more filtering media?) than the shallow one.

It does matter for the filter. I put a Summit Racing 4L60 in my 2004 Yukon and it shipped with a finned polished pan. It leaked no matter what I did to fix it so I called Summit and they sent me a brand new GM pan and gasket. When I went to install the new pan, it would not work with the supplied filter, so I went to O’Reillys to get one. I looked at both filters available and we determined the shallow vs. deep pan differences. I got the right filter and put it back together and no more leaking. I don’t think the dipstick reading is affected because that corner of the pan where it sits is the same on both pans, I think… not 100% sure on that.

I would need to go look at my receipts and get the part number for the pan Summit sent me and the part number for the O’Reillys filter to be of help. A knowledgeable parts counter person should know the differences and get the right filter for the particular pan.

You are correct. It really dependent on level. If you put a 10" deep pan (I'm exaggerating just for an example) the full level does not change, it'll just hold more fluid. So no matter what, dipstick reading wont change.

Thank you for clarifying that.

I talked to RPM transmissions and they said the B & M comes with a filter extension so you use the oem filter and dipstick.

The extension goes onto the neck of the filter between it and the transmission. So the extension slides into the oring in the trans just so everyone is clear on it.

The oem filter with the extension provided with the pan sits too deep. The pan hits the filter and with the gasket I’m still 1/4” from the pan sitting flush with the trans.

ETA: since our pan is already the deeper version for the 4l60e we need the fbody shallow filter along with the extension provided by B&M for their deep pan to have the correct fitment.

Hopefully this info helps someone and keeps them from making the same mistake. The GTO filter without extension doesn't sit deep enough in the B&M pan and with the extension is too deep and doesn't clear the pan.
