Getting tired of the all black wheels on the 04

536 Views 20 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Rich-Tripower
I'm thinking they would look better in silver or even a copper color. I like the design of the wheels, just not the black. Would I be foolish to scuff and paint them or should I go the full blown route of having them stripped and powder coated?

PFR.

Maybe to get a feel for it. Do like red plastidio on the spoke but leave the rim ring black. Or some other combo.

I would put red on the rims somewhere if I did anything. Or I'd roll polished

I had a yellow and had I got rims they would have been polished ri g black spokes. Sane design as your wheel
I'd only spend the money on powder coat once. Second the plastidip.

I used a spray can on the wife's track wheels while she was deciding.

Why not go something very unique? Powder coat them copper or whatever.

Try checking out other forums of different cars and see whats what regarding wheels.

Know that your rotors and calipers will be right there. They look nice fyi.
Plastidip. That way you can try a few different colors. Have them powder coated once you find the color you like.

X3 on the Plastidip. They have all kinds of colors, as well as a "Metalizer" to give the coating a metallic look. If you use this stuff, make sure you spray it on pretty thick. It peels off better when thick. If the residue wont come off, kerosene will remove it.

When / if you decide to powder coat them, check out --> https://www.prismaticpowders.com/shop/powder-coating-collections You could spend DAYS looking at the different colors. You can do several different stages of powder coating to get a specific look.

Plasti-Dip. It's just too easy.
Figure out what you want, "then" find a way to do it.

Greetings Rich & all; OK, how to improve on something that looks terrific already?? Well the Outomibile isn't sayin' shinny or chrome. My $.02 cents, place a round (very round) piece of tight cardboard behind the spokes so the back -inside stays black. Then plastic coat the spokes & outer rim red?? Ole' Bob. Ps: These are charcoal back side w/ bronze outside.

I ordered the DYC Burnt Copper kit. So tired of looking at those black wheels.

I masked off the barrels of the wheels since I want that part to remain black. I assume I have to peel the masking off immediately after the last coat of dip spray while things are still wet to get a clean break line and to avoid pulling up any of the dip coating? Or should I just let it cure and then score around the edge of the masking with a hobby knife or something like that?

Pull it off while wet.

The dip kit and the respirator I bought should both be here on Friday so hopefully I can get this wheel dipping job done yet this coming weekend.

Well, typical for me the project started out well but I got tired of the process and tried to hard to get product laid down later on and ended up with some runs. I was able to salvage one situation, the other is a mess. Wheels 1 and 2 turned out nice, salvaged number 3 and 4 will require some repair and refinishing. For now I'm going to let it all cure and get them on the car. I have a repair kit coming from Dipyourcar. I ordered it last week with the anticipation I would need it.... It really is a bit of a challenge to paint wheels with such thin spokes and with so many spokes. Hard to get even coverage and to avoid sags and runs. The kit has you put black dip down first, one whole can per wheel! It was kind of hard to tell what kind of coverage I was getting spraying black dip onto black wheels.

I used a respirator while painting, haven't had one for a while. Sure is nice to finish a project like this and not be blowing paint colored snot out of my nose and having who knows how much gunk in my lungs. I has asthma so you'd think I'd know better to mask up every single time.

Interestingly enough, this color is VERY close to Brazen Orange. I had the 06 here at the house while I was doing this project and put a finished one up beside the car and it was pretty close. A bit more prominent metallic but the color is pretty close. They should really look good on the red car, red car with copper or bronze wheels has always looked great. Ferrari does this combo a lot so it must be good, right?

Sure I am.

The dip pulls right off the tires. Part of the kit even includes a special bottle of release agent you apply to the tires prior to spraying the dip to make it easy to remove.
