GTO - Sport Appearance Package (SAP) Archive

I thought it might be helpful to compile a thread which contains as much info as possible on the OEM Sport Appearance Package (SAP) for the 2004-2006 GTO.

There was actually a smaller 2004 SAP kit, before the larger 2005 / 2006 SAP kit. Over the years there have been some heated discussions about what components did or did not come in the SAP kit. I had always considered Mike at DMS the expert at anything SAP (considering he got GM to create the front extension fastening kit for us), plus GM/Pontiac's own printed sales brochure is hard to argue with.

The 2004 SAP components included:
  • Front Grills (AutoX)
  • Hood with scoops (2005 hood)
  • Custom Spoiler
The 2005/06 SAP included:
  • Front Grills (AutoX)
  • Front Fascia Extension (w/SAP-specific license plate holder)
  • Rocker Panels
  • Rear Fascia
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Mufflers and Quad tips (Magnaflow)
  • Notes: The SAP front fascia extension hardware kit was not included in SAP kit. It had to be obtained separately from GM—a rare item. Also, the 18” rims were not part of SAP.
In the following posts, I’ll get us started with photos of the 2005 SAP sales brochure, and of my own original OEM SAP paperwork for: SAP AutoX front grills, SAP front fascia extension, SAP front fascia extension hardware kit, SAP spoiler. If by chance anyone has printed/scanned copies of the. SAP rockers or rear bumper, please post them here. Else post any info you have about the GTO SAP kit. Thanks in advance to all contributors.

For folks new to SAP components or when buying previously owned SAP gear—How to clearly identify authentic OEM GM/Pontiac SAP components:
  • SAP Front Grills and rear Spoiler -- The backside is stamped/cast with "Made in Austria" (not Australia)
  • SAP Front Fascia Extension, Rockers, Rear Fascia -- The backside is stamped/cast with "Made in Great Britain"
  • Mufflers/Quad tips -- Both are made by Magnaflow, but are not stamped with their name nor a GM part number (reference pics in later posts)

I’m glad they changed it to PONTIAC on the trunk in 05. GTO on the trunk and valence/bumper is redundant and looks off.

Then again, no badges on the trunk of an 05-06 look even better.
Oooh, I bought the 2005 flip card set that seller had listed.
Nice. Those parts are essentially right down the street from me. For NOS OEM parts, those sure aren’t bad prices.
You can buy those KBD repro rockers shipped for a fraction of the price.
I've never seen any of their stuff in person but how bad could they eff those up?
I know from first hand experience they are terrible quality.

Hmm, every single OEM SAP side skirt I've seen (including the NOS one's I bought) had black screens. I specifically had my body shop tape mine off as to not change the factory black color. Perhaps GM sent some out that were in a natural color though...

Been extremely busy with some family and work stuff and have not had much time to even be on this forum lately. I do not have SAP side extension installation instructions, but as noted, the rear section of the rockers are only held on with 3M tape. It’s pretty intuitive on how to attach that section with tape. Pull one piece of the tape film up over the rocker, bolt it up, then pull the strip and press firmly for a minute.

I’d caution you to remove the OEM tape and install new stuff as I had to remove mine and do just that when the decades old tape failed to adhere after a few hours and could not get it to attach again. Pulled them off, new tape, and all has been well for now. I also put a thin strip on the body as well to aid in adhering them.

SAP rockers were US GTO only.
Leave the plastic clips in. They act as a ledge for the lip of the rockers to rest on and give you a guide for how high to install them.
Nice. Please report back on the quality and how the install goes. The fitment on these used to be sub-par, and hope that's changed.
Comparing bodywork/paint prices is always an apples to oranges comparison as you’re paying more for the experience (labor rate) and shop capabilities (ability to custom mix paint) than the base hours and raw supplies to paint “x” part. Those also vary a lot from region to region.

The shop I trust is an hour away from me and I live in a populous area with countless decent body shops near me. I pay a premium for this guy as he mixes his own paints and does spray-out cards until he gets the shade perfect. I spend a lot of money on the first part he ever paints for me for a new vehicle as there is generally a lot of time spent perfecting the color formula.

The cost to paint the same part close to me by a shop that simply pulls the color code, orders a pint, and paints said part, is significantly less.

Still sort of hard to offer ballpark figures as there are simply too many variables to consider unless you both live in the same area and are utilizing the same type of shop.

For example, and in my particular instance during my last painting project, I decided to ask a local shop for a quote to paint my SAP side skirts. They pulled up a repair tool showing how much labor should be applied, inputed the cost of purchasing a pre-mixed pint of paint and clear, and printed off a repair bill. $600.

The place I go to is a specialty shop who handles restorations and the owner is the painter. He's transparent with all of his customers that he never knows what it will take to get the color and finish perfect, so will not offer a dollar estimate. I know he does amazing work so gave him my rockers. He calls me 2 weeks later when he's done with them and tells me what I owe him. In this instance, "You're bill is $1200 plus tax". He's fair, and does phenomenal work, so I just go into it knowing the cost is what it is if I want a quality job. I've paid him extra labor on certain projects in the past as he wasn't happy with the results and either needed to spend more time doing spray-outs, or had to re-paint parts that didn't meet his/my expectations.

So, there are 2 different approaches with one shop being twice as much (and sometimes even more). My $1200 ballpark figure for my project wouldn't be a good comparison to someone who's getting a quote from the first type of shop I stopped into for a quote.

My suggestion to anyone is to simply find a shop that cares, does great work, and pay them what they are worth.

GM made a special front plate bracket for SAP-extensioned front bumpers. Probably hard to find one, and it would be much better to just cut down and secure a front plate into the lower grille, or buy one of those universal hideaway plate holders.

It's funny, about a year ago I had sold off the extension installation kit that GM/DMS came out with that I had stored away since I had my orignal 2005 PBM. I had picked it up in case the SAP extension needed it on my '05 but I sold it off years ago, yet still had the install kit. I believe a member on here bought it from me last year.
Ha, I’m that member.

They’re absolutely painted. I’m wondering if this is the same SRM that was for sale years ago with the same painted headlights.
