GTO - Sport Appearance Package (SAP) Archive

I thought it might be helpful to compile a thread which contains as much info as possible on the OEM Sport Appearance Package (SAP) for the 2004-2006 GTO.

There was actually a smaller 2004 SAP kit, before the larger 2005 / 2006 SAP kit. Over the years there have been some heated discussions about what components did or did not come in the SAP kit. I had always considered Mike at DMS the expert at anything SAP (considering he got GM to create the front extension fastening kit for us), plus GM/Pontiac's own printed sales brochure is hard to argue with.

The 2004 SAP components included:
  • Front Grills (AutoX)
  • Hood with scoops (2005 hood)
  • Custom Spoiler
The 2005/06 SAP included:
  • Front Grills (AutoX)
  • Front Fascia Extension (w/SAP-specific license plate holder)
  • Rocker Panels
  • Rear Fascia
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Mufflers and Quad tips (Magnaflow)
  • Notes: The SAP front fascia extension hardware kit was not included in SAP kit. It had to be obtained separately from GM—a rare item. Also, the 18” rims were not part of SAP.
In the following posts, I’ll get us started with photos of the 2005 SAP sales brochure, and of my own original OEM SAP paperwork for: SAP AutoX front grills, SAP front fascia extension, SAP front fascia extension hardware kit, SAP spoiler. If by chance anyone has printed/scanned copies of the. SAP rockers or rear bumper, please post them here. Else post any info you have about the GTO SAP kit. Thanks in advance to all contributors.

For folks new to SAP components or when buying previously owned SAP gear—How to clearly identify authentic OEM GM/Pontiac SAP components:
  • SAP Front Grills and rear Spoiler -- The backside is stamped/cast with "Made in Austria" (not Australia)
  • SAP Front Fascia Extension, Rockers, Rear Fascia -- The backside is stamped/cast with "Made in Great Britain"
  • Mufflers/Quad tips -- Both are made by Magnaflow, but are not stamped with their name nor a GM part number (reference pics in later posts)

That is some good info/documentation to have for people/prospective GTO buyers to see. I don't know if there is anything out there for the 2004 kit because it was a last minute put together by GM to help push the last of the 2004s off the lots. Nonetheless, I paid $500 at the dealer parts department for my 2004 kit, which was the grills, the spoiler and the 2005 hood. This was absolute theft on my part and I can't think of a better deal I have ever gotten on parts like that.

Right on, yeah those parts sound like the components of the 04 SAP. I don’t recall if there was a brochure or not.

I recall the grills and spoiler being called Autocross grills and Autocross spoiler, yet the 2005 SAP kit documentation doesn’t mention ‘Autocross’. Pretty sure my old receipt even mentions it. Where did the Autocross part come from? Was that from the 04 kit?
I remember the term Autocross being used to describe the grills, I think...

For kicks and some nostalgia to this thread, here is my receipt from 2005 for the 2004 SAP kit...

I have every receipt for parts and maintenance on mine. I have a separate folder for all of the purchase paperwork, which includes a copy of the MSO and the window sticker. The only thing I don't have is gas receipts which is probably a little obsessive.

I really like these MC2 wheels. Unfortunately, theyre only 8" wheels so even if I push it the widest tire Ill get on their is a 255. The original owner put a SC on and some other items so it was already just a bit below 500 whp when I got it. Im about to do the heads/cam and some other items. So a 245 or even the 255 tire simply wont be enough :ROFLMAO:
If you really like the wheel, get 2 of them widened 1.5" so that you can go 275, 285 wide in the rear. May have to roll fenders, massage inner fender depending on suspension set up. Plenty of people on here have had the stock 17s and 18s widened with no problems.
FWIW—I found an old thread that said the 04 SAP kit was officially called the “Retro Package” by GM. New to me but curious if anyone has the GM literature.

Mike/DMS also mentioned that you basically got a free ‘05 hood by purchasing the grills and spoiler, similar to your receipt showed. He also mentioned the Autocross grills/spoiler were one and the same as the same bits in the SAP kit.
I have heard of the SAP parts referred to as Autocross grills and spoiler. I think it was an unofficial name that GM was using. I did not remember how the pricing breakdown worked until I pulled out my receipt. I was like, dam, I got a free hood out of this deal! I remember when I heard about the deal...$500 for all of it and when I called the dealership, it took the parts guy a little bit to figure it out. I reserved my parts over the phone and went back the next weekend to pick it all up. I was thinking if I snoozed, I was gonna lose.

I regret selling my SAP spoiler. I'm still on the fence about its looks but I should have kept it. I did get $200 for it which brought my SAP investment down to $300. Maybe I'll get lucky and one will be for sale for the right price.

I like the SAP bumper better than the 05, 06 bumper. But I like the 2004 bumper with a clean cut out on the right side the best. The spoiler had grown on me so either one works but I am not a fan of the spoilerless look. Finally saw that in person a few years ago and I wasn't feeling it.

One thing is still for sure... if you like the SAP parts and want the GM original stuff, be prepared to look long and hard and then pay out your ass if you find it.

I may do the bumper cut on my 04, or buy another 04 rear bumper to work with, but I really like my Corsa Sport with oval tip. Finding another one of those will be like finding a needle in a haystack, so I guess I should look for one of them first before go any further.

^^ Is that a Midnight Blue Metallic?
No, it was Impulse Blue Metallic.
I was having a hard time with the lighting trying to be sure. I like the MBM color.

Some of this stuff is out of control price wise, but to each his or her own. It makes me appreciate my 2004 bumper mod much more and I think it looks better. I will admit that the SAP front bumper extension has kind of grown on me and I am seriously thinking about buying a GTOG8TA repro along with a splitter. Still teetering back and forth on it.

And agreed, GTOG8TA is a great SAP repro resource.
I just broke down and ordered their SAP extension. It has grown on me enough to go for it. As much as I would love an OEM piece for the sake of it being a factory part, I can’t stomach the pricing. I think Hawks has an OE extension on eBay for $1200 or best offer, FYI for someone wanting the GM part.

My SAP extension shipped today. This was a pretty spur of the moment thing to do, 😁.

Nice. Please report back on the quality and how the install goes. The fitment on these used to be sub-par, and hope that's changed.
Right out of the box, it definitely needs some prep work to care of some imperfections from manufacturing. There was no protective packaging inside the box, meaning the fascia was placed in the box as is and shipped. The box survived and so did the part from what I saw. The threaded nut serts are a good idea, but no hardware or double sided tape is included. The shop paining my front bumper will prep, paint and install it so I will get some feedback from them on it and update the thread.
Dropped it off at the paint shop this morning. The guy was kinda “meh” about it but he isn’t a big fan of aftermarket parts to begin with. My front bumper and Catera door handles are done. He said to check with him on Friday. I will stop in tomorrow morning and talk some more with him. He had UPS, FedEx and an LTL truck all delivering when I showed up, so there wasn’t much time to talk.

how much was it to prep paint and install if you don’t mind me asking.
I do mind… I think I will leave that out of the conversation.

You seen one SAP extension, you seen them all, so here’s one more… this wasn’t a fun project for the body shop. It was a pain in the ass and the fitment of the extension wasn’t very good. As it stands right now, it needs a little tweaking and there are some imperfections that need attention. I did not put the double sided tape on for this very reason. It will be coming off again. The 6 bolts that are holding on, plus the 2 screws on the back of the lip where it meets the fender liners are pretty strong. I bought some good stainless flanged 1/4x20 bolts along with half inch flat washers and lock washers to bolt it down. I will use the double sided tape when I take it off and put it back on. The fitment could be better around the lower back sides and along the front in various spots. Maybe the tape will fix that but I have seen the video where the guy installed it without the tape and it definitely looks better than mine. It took a lot of prep work to get this thing half way decent but it needs more. So if you are looking for perfection, you’ll have to work at it, or your paint guy will have to. This wraps this project up for now. It is acceptable for now, and when I am done other projects, it is coming apart and getting redone….

And a question for you body and paint experts… is it possible to add nut serts to the fascia without damaging it? I think at least 4 more bolts in the right spots would go a long way in securing it and it fitting and looking better. I’m also asking about this since I bought the tool to install the beauty bolt nut serts for the radiator cover… may as well put it to good use.
justt bought one with a "partial sports appearance package" i.e same inserts but front modified bumper . i need to put a license plate in the front.. the typical bracket doesnt fit.. any one has installed a plate on this upgraded front end?
Honestly, I would take my chances and skip the front plate. I think it detracts from the front end and, at least in my area, law enforcement doesn’t push the front plate. As mentioned, the special front SAP license plate bracket will be a bitch to find and the regular stock plate will have to be crafted to look right. As also mentioned, with the stock lower grill, the plate bracket could be mounted upside down on the grill and zip tied securely. I am pretty sure that it won’t work with the SAP extension.

Worst case scenario, go to a parts store and buy an off the shelf bracket that you can make work and look decent.
