I thought it might be helpful to compile a thread which contains as much info as possible on the OEM Sport Appearance Package (SAP) for the 2004-2006 GTO.

There was actually a smaller 2004 SAP kit, before the larger 2005 / 2006 SAP kit. Over the years there have been some heated discussions about what components did or did not come in the SAP kit. I had always considered Mike at DMS the expert at anything SAP (considering he got GM to create the front extension fastening kit for us), plus GM/Pontiac's own printed sales brochure is hard to argue with.

The 2004 SAP components included:
  • Front Grills (AutoX)
  • Hood with scoops (2005 hood)
  • Custom Spoiler
The 2005/06 SAP included:
  • Front Grills (AutoX)
  • Front Fascia Extension (w/SAP-specific license plate holder)
  • Rocker Panels
  • Rear Fascia
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Mufflers and Quad tips (Magnaflow)
  • Notes: The SAP front fascia extension hardware kit was not included in SAP kit. It had to be obtained separately from GM—a rare item. Also, the 18” rims were not part of SAP.
In the following posts, I’ll get us started with photos of the 2005 SAP sales brochure, and of my own original OEM SAP paperwork for: SAP AutoX front grills, SAP front fascia extension, SAP front fascia extension hardware kit, SAP spoiler. If by chance anyone has printed/scanned copies of the. SAP rockers or rear bumper, please post them here. Else post any info you have about the GTO SAP kit. Thanks in advance to all contributors.

For folks new to SAP components or when buying previously owned SAP gear—How to clearly identify authentic OEM GM/Pontiac SAP components:
  • SAP Front Grills and rear Spoiler -- The backside is stamped/cast with "Made in Austria" (not Australia)
  • SAP Front Fascia Extension, Rockers, Rear Fascia -- The backside is stamped/cast with "Made in Great Britain"
  • Mufflers/Quad tips -- Both are made by Magnaflow, but are not stamped with their name nor a GM part number (reference pics in later posts)

Excellent idea! I recently picked up an SAP 05 torred red. Per those instructions it actually appears there are supposed to be screws/bolts that hold the front fascia onto the bumper. I just got my front bumper and the fascia piece repainted (to plug the front license plate holes 🤦‍♂️) and there were no screws/bolts used when the fascia was originally installed by the dealership. The shop I had don't he repaint didn't use screws to reattach and just used automotive double sided tape. Worried it won't last as long as I prefer 🙄.
Great job finding the 05 full SAP, must be nice. Make sure you post up some pics for us to admire.

The front ext HW kit was only available for a few months back in 2005, IIRC. It should have been included in the front extension itself but wasn’t. Mike from DMS helped get it designed and got it pushed thru the red tape at GM to get it added with its own unique GM part number. A bunch of us were fortunate enough to get them for our fascia installs back then. I’ll never forget sweating so much as I was drilling those holes!

As long as your shop cleaned/prepped everything well, the double sided tape should last a good while. But keep an eye on the gaps over time. At some point may need to fabricate some fasteners similar to what was included in this kit.

That is some good info/documentation to have for people/prospective GTO buyers to see. I don't know if there is anything out there for the 2004 kit because it was a last minute put together by GM to help push the last of the 2004s off the lots. Nonetheless, I paid $500 at the dealer parts department for my 2004 kit, which was the grills, the spoiler and the 2005 hood. This was absolute theft on my part and I can't think of a better deal I have ever gotten on parts like that.
Right on, yeah those parts sound like the components of the 04 SAP. I don’t recall if there was a brochure or not.

I recall the grills and possibly also the spoiler being called Autocross grills and spoiler, yet the 2005 SAP kit documentation doesn’t mention ‘Autocross’. Pretty sure my old receipt for my grills even mentions it. Where did the Autocross name come from? Was that from the 04 kit?

Nice ride cjsxv3! I totally forgot about those wheels. Can you take a pic of the flyer and add it to this thread? Seems fitting… dealer installed option just like the SAP. Also any chance the previous owner saved the GM installation paperwork for the SAP rockers, rear bumper or exhaust components?

Just added page 2 back, not sure how it dropped. I’ll try to locate the drill bits or other hw that came with the kit. I tend to save everything. Unfortunately I do know Mike/DMS has long since purged all his GTO files.

I do not have an unused kit, but I may still have the drill bits that came with it to confirm depth stops.

Below is an old pic of the OEM SAP mufflers. Can someone confirm for me… is the one on the left the driver side and the one on the right passenger side?

FWIW—I found an old thread that said the 04 SAP kit was officially called the “Retro Package” by GM. New to me but curious if anyone has the GM literature.

Mike/DMS also mentioned that you basically got a free ‘05 hood by purchasing the grills and spoiler, similar to your receipt showed. He also mentioned the Autocross grills/spoiler were one and the same as the same bits in the SAP kit.

So it seems GMs idea of “retro” at the time was to give the new GTO the scooped hood. Hmm, altho add to that notion…I’ve always thought the SAP spoiler was a nod to the 1969 GTO Judge’s spoiler.

How about the SAP pages from the 2005 and 2006 GTO brochures?
Your post reminded me about that one closeup pic of the SAP tips where it clearly said “Magnaflow” stamped on them in the pre-production pictures that Pontiac put out, but the actual tips (nor the mufflers) didn’t have Magnaflow on them. I found this closeup pic:

I was never a fan of the SAP spoiler or rear bumper for that matter. But theyve grown on me. Im liking the sap spoiler even more now know that it rather resembles that 69 GTO Judge spoiler in the picture! Im not a huge fan of the late 60s GTOs. The 65 is my favorite car period, I've had 2 and eventually I'll get another one :)
You and me both re: the SAP spoiler and rear bumper growing on me.

I have the 2005 SEMA GTO. The tips have GM Performance stickers on them, but no magnaflow anywhere. It actually had Borla mufflers. It’s like pre-pre-production. More like prototype they threw together
No kidding. I remember there being some confusion back in 2005 re: Borla vs Magnaflow for the SAP exhaust. That explains some of that…Very cool thx for that info. Any chance you have some pics you can share of the car?

Great pix, thank you for sharing what you have there! Looks to be full SAP with some GM custom adds. And agreed interesting they used the 04 muffler location and no dead pedal. 5k miles on the clock, incredible. Even the Pontiac arrowhead on the front is still red and hasn’t yet turned orange!

Judge Appearance Package?

A question for anyone who may have an inside contact at GM or somehow just knows anything about this—

Way back in the day, I believe I recall hearing rumors that GM was originally planning to do an 05/06 GTO “Judge” edition. But only recently I read something online that possibly the SAP components may have originally been intended for a Judge model. And that all 3 years of the “base” GTO would receive the LS1 engine, with the LS2 being used only for the Judge model. Intriguing.

One could assume that similar to the confirmed 2004 GTOs final 800-units Pulse red (hidden) “40th Anniversary” package/callouts, possibly the “Judge” project was killed by GM after the initial poor reception of the new GTO by the general public. Instead, the “40th Anniversary” callouts never materialize, and GM sells off the Judge components as the 05/06 Sport Appearance Package. And as we all know, the LS2 became the standard engine for all 05s and 06s. Just curious if this is stupid Interwebs fake news, or if there is actually any truth behind short-lived plans for a Judge model.

Edit—answering my own question, I recently was fortunate to have a conversation with someone in GM who was directly involved with both the V2 Monaro and the new GTO. He confirmed that aside from some undocumented/underground plan for a Judge, there were no formal GM plans for a Judge model that he was aware of. Case closed.

Interesting….. just found this image buried in another SAP thread. (edit) FYI—this is a poster from the Jan 2005 issue of Hot Rod magazine. (/edit) I think this is the first Pontiac print/ad I’ve seen for the SAP package where the lower center black plastic of the front extension was painted body color…

But then again, if you look at the following poster of the PBM SAP GTO with the Grand Prix GXP, you can see the OEM front grille was left on behind the SAP front extension. I don’t think anyone knew the right way to install/paint these, even Pontiac/GM dealers.
