GTO - Sport Appearance Package (SAP) Archive

I thought it might be helpful to compile a thread which contains as much info as possible on the OEM Sport Appearance Package (SAP) for the 2004-2006 GTO.

There was actually a smaller 2004 SAP kit, before the larger 2005 / 2006 SAP kit. Over the years there have been some heated discussions about what components did or did not come in the SAP kit. I had always considered Mike at DMS the expert at anything SAP (considering he got GM to create the front extension fastening kit for us), plus GM/Pontiac's own printed sales brochure is hard to argue with.

The 2004 SAP components included:
  • Front Grills (AutoX)
  • Hood with scoops (2005 hood)
  • Custom Spoiler
The 2005/06 SAP included:
  • Front Grills (AutoX)
  • Front Fascia Extension (w/SAP-specific license plate holder)
  • Rocker Panels
  • Rear Fascia
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Mufflers and Quad tips (Magnaflow)
  • Notes: The SAP front fascia extension hardware kit was not included in SAP kit. It had to be obtained separately from GM—a rare item. Also, the 18” rims were not part of SAP.
In the following posts, I’ll get us started with photos of the 2005 SAP sales brochure, and of my own original OEM SAP paperwork for: SAP AutoX front grills, SAP front fascia extension, SAP front fascia extension hardware kit, SAP spoiler. If by chance anyone has printed/scanned copies of the. SAP rockers or rear bumper, please post them here. Else post any info you have about the GTO SAP kit. Thanks in advance to all contributors.

For folks new to SAP components or when buying previously owned SAP gear—How to clearly identify authentic OEM GM/Pontiac SAP components:
  • SAP Front Grills and rear Spoiler -- The backside is stamped/cast with "Made in Austria" (not Australia)
  • SAP Front Fascia Extension, Rockers, Rear Fascia -- The backside is stamped/cast with "Made in Great Britain"
  • Mufflers/Quad tips -- Both are made by Magnaflow, but are not stamped with their name nor a GM part number (reference pics in later posts)

I might have considered those SAP side skirts but he has them listed as pick up only.
You can buy those KBD repro rockers shipped for a fraction of the price.
I've never seen any of their stuff in person but how bad could they eff those up?
$3k for rockers and fascia? No thank you.

I know from first hand experience they are terrible quality.

Same.. bought years ago, installed w lousy gaps and returned. Found OEM not long after.
Question about the SAP side skirts. Are the little grills in the front painted body color or are they painted black or gunmetal or some other darker color? Haven't yet found a good close up photo of the little grills.
Edit—apparently the rocker screens are black, according to Ski’s NOS rockers. Can’t argue with NOS! Wasn’t 1000% sure as I bought my rockers used many years back.

Pic below. Believe the visible area of the screens are bare metal, but not 100% certain. Painted or not, they are a gunmetal gray color for sure.

The rear bumper has the same screens, and when I removed them to have the bumper sprayed, I was surprised to see the screens were partially painted from the factory. I should have saved a picture of them… basically the part of the screens not visible through the rear SAP bumper openings were painted black. While the visible parts look the same as the following…

Perfect photo. Thanks!
Hmm, every single OEM SAP side skirt I've seen (including the NOS one's I bought) had black screens. I specifically had my body shop tape mine off as to not change the factory black color. Perhaps GM sent some out that were in a natural color though...

Guess I’ll have to take mine off and paint em. Meh, good enough.

Maybe the grills were painted silver when the rockers were painted black?
Not sure if my grilles/mesh were stripped/sprayed way back when I had the rockers repainted.

Oh, I thought they came from the factory as black. I guess in the end they can be whatever you want.
Like many others I bought my SAP rockers used, so unsure what prior owner did painting them. Back in 06 (well before I had the SAP rockers) a couple guys in my group had full SAP and I believe the rocker screens were black. But also recall seeing a couple silver or body color matching the rear SAP bumper screens.

Yielding these fine details to folks stating they have NOS SAP components. At the end of the day, I just want this thread (archive) to be as accurate and useful to people as possible. And yes the same goes for my own car, so I may adjust how my screens are finished.

Someone bought the NOS rockers from eBay, so there’s multiple sets out there. Again, appreciate anyone with NOS SAP items, updating this thread with scans of the remaining SAP documentation—rockers, rear bumper.
Ski, to Rich’s original question—can you post a close-up of the mesh/screens on your NOS rockers? Be great to capture for the record.

EDIT/update—I found an old post (2005) with a closeup pic of new OEM SAP rockers still in wrapper…

And then these NOS unpainted rockers show up.....

I've been looking for a set of these for a long time and what do you know I finally found a set and they are NOS primered copies. The story of them actually getting here is a long one, but they arrived in fine shape and the goal is to get them painted up and mounted on the BOM 06.

The grills are painted black.

So I bought a pint of paint to have these rockers painted BOM. I guess I haven't bought paint in a long time, SHEESH! That said, I bought the really good PPG/Deltron stuff because I have used it in the past and it is very durable, lays down beautifully and the color match is dead on. Best not to risk getting a bad color match just to save money on less expensive paint.

One question for those who have installed SAP rockers. One section of the lip of the inside of the rockers have what looks like 3M tape. I don't believe the stock rockers use anything like this. Do the SAP rockers not attach to the car in the same way as the stockers with screws and clips? From the looks of the back side of the SAP rockers, they do not have the slide in clip slots like the stockers, it looks like they just are attached with screws and the aforementioned 3M tape which adheres the top edge of the rocker to the body between the door opening and the rear wheel arch.

Does anyone have the original GM instructions for the install of SAP rockers? So do I need any special clips or anything to attach them?

I have some spare stock rockers, I'll try to get some comparison photos at a later time. They are oddly marked "MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN". The Vauxhall Monaro used an even different style of rocker cover but did they or any other version of the global Monaros use the SAP style rockers?

The SAP rockers do not attach with all the same clips as the stock rockers, only some of them. They use the existing OEM lower screws and screws in each wheel well, and the black push/screw plastic pins under the door weather seal, but they do not use the white clips along the rear quarter panel. You should use the double-side tape on that rear quarter section, to keep the smallest gap possible.

Hoping Ski has a copy of the instructions, else, they actually may not exist. The most recent eBay seller of NOS rockers did not have instructions.

Fairly certain all SAP gear were US/Pontiac market only. All of the SAP components were specifically stamped either Made in Great Britain or Made in Austria… that is how you know you have OEM SAP gear. I've updated the first post of this thread with this key authenticity/identification info—it's been discussed numerous times on other SAP threads, but important to have in this archive.
These clips are not used by the SAP rockers.
