GTO - Sport Appearance Package (SAP) Archive

I thought it might be helpful to compile a thread which contains as much info as possible on the OEM Sport Appearance Package (SAP) for the 2004-2006 GTO.

There was actually a smaller 2004 SAP kit, before the larger 2005 / 2006 SAP kit. Over the years there have been some heated discussions about what components did or did not come in the SAP kit. I had always considered Mike at DMS the expert at anything SAP (considering he got GM to create the front extension fastening kit for us), plus GM/Pontiac's own printed sales brochure is hard to argue with.

The 2004 SAP components included:
  • Front Grills (AutoX)
  • Hood with scoops (2005 hood)
  • Custom Spoiler
The 2005/06 SAP included:
  • Front Grills (AutoX)
  • Front Fascia Extension (w/SAP-specific license plate holder)
  • Rocker Panels
  • Rear Fascia
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Mufflers and Quad tips (Magnaflow)
  • Notes: The SAP front fascia extension hardware kit was not included in SAP kit. It had to be obtained separately from GM—a rare item. Also, the 18” rims were not part of SAP.
In the following posts, I’ll get us started with photos of the 2005 SAP sales brochure, and of my own original OEM SAP paperwork for: SAP AutoX front grills, SAP front fascia extension, SAP front fascia extension hardware kit, SAP spoiler. If by chance anyone has printed/scanned copies of the. SAP rockers or rear bumper, please post them here. Else post any info you have about the GTO SAP kit. Thanks in advance to all contributors.

For folks new to SAP components or when buying previously owned SAP gear—How to clearly identify authentic OEM GM/Pontiac SAP components:
  • SAP Front Grills and rear Spoiler -- The backside is stamped/cast with "Made in Austria" (not Australia)
  • SAP Front Fascia Extension, Rockers, Rear Fascia -- The backside is stamped/cast with "Made in Great Britain"
  • Mufflers/Quad tips -- Both are made by Magnaflow, but are not stamped with their name nor a GM part number (reference pics in later posts)

Welcome to the forum and the SAP club. Nice rides you got there.

The SAP-specific front license plate holder only came with the full SAP kit from GM; you couldn’t buy it separately. Back in 2005/06 or so, I had moved from MA (single green plate) to NH and needed to put a plate on my SAP front end. Even back then, it was quite hard to find an SAP front plate holder, but I was fortunate enough to find someone with the full SAP kit whose state didn’t require the front plate and they didn’t mind letting it go. It may be damn near impossible to find one now…..

Alternately, I’ve heard inverting a stock plate holder on the lower OEM grill works well, just not sure if that will work on the SAP grill.
Odd....because back in 2005 when I bought the SAP extension directly from GM in primer, it did come with the front license plate holder for it. I didn't buy the whole SAP kit, just the spoiler, extension, and grill inserts. I never used it and unfortunately got rid of it a long time ago.
how much was it to prep paint and install if you don’t mind me asking.
My buddy put 8 hours into the prep work on the extension alone...smoothed out a lot of the "grille" (black) area aspect, and made sure as much of the oily part of the material was washed out of it. Maybe he did more than he needed to but since we are friends he put the extra effort into the prep work. Not sure if that will help you make a determination. He prepped and painted the extension, the grills, an NOS SAP spoiler I found, the lower rear fascia, my engine covers (custom coloring), and a couple other things for the cost. (approx. $1800 total for all the work/paint/materials/prep)

You seen one SAP extension, you seen them all, so here’s one more… this wasn’t a fun project for the body shop. It was a pain in the ass and the fitment of the extension wasn’t very good. As it stands right now, it needs a little tweaking and there are some imperfections that need attention. I did not put the double sided tape on for this very reason. It will be coming off again. The 6 bolts that are holding on, plus the 2 screws on the back of the lip where it meets the fender liners are pretty strong. I bought some good stainless flanged 1/4x20 bolts along with half inch flat washers and lock washers to bolt it down. I will use the double sided tape when I take it off and put it back on. The fitment could be better around the lower back sides and along the front in various spots. Maybe the tape will fix that but I have seen the video where the guy installed it without the tape and it definitely looks better than mine. It took a lot of prep work to get this thing half way decent but it needs more. So if you are looking for perfection, you’ll have to work at it, or your paint guy will have to. This wraps this project up for now. It is acceptable for now, and when I am done other projects, it is coming apart and getting redone….

What LEDs did you use for your headlights and fog lights?

IIRC, some dealers (DMS, Fred Beans, etc) bought full kits and may have wound up parting them out, possibly you got lucky, not sure

Yeah, that’s a definite possibility.
It's funny, about a year ago I had sold off the extension installation kit that GM/DMS came out with that I had stored away since I had my orignal 2005 PBM. I had picked it up in case the SAP extension needed it on my '05 but I sold it off years ago, yet still had the install kit. I believe a member on here bought it from me last year.
Ha, I’m that member.

The headlights are now HIDs, which are the BPS Lighting Terminator 35 watt 6K kit. In the high beams are BPS Lighting Perfect Fit H11s and in the fog lights are BPS Lighting Perfect Fit 9040s.

Sorry. I just couldn't remember who bought it. Old retired guy brain syndrome LOL
the trick using a FORD license plate holder worked like a charm .. snug and tight with some cables ties.

That looks great…. Nice work, and sharp looking ride!

Question… were your headlights opened and the insides painted to match the car color, or is that just reflection messing with me?
Those look painted. And they look great 👍
They’re absolutely painted. I’m wondering if this is the same SRM that was for sale years ago with the same painted headlights.
owner i bought it from had it for 4 years.. 2 prior owners before that so... might be ya'll already saw for sale.
and yes inside of headlights is painted metallic red as rest of the car.
