Has anybody ever had an RD hardwired into one of their vehicles? I'm thinking if getting this done in the goat, since there's only one damn power receptacle. I know which model I'm buying, but just don't know whether I should do it myself or have the retailer do it fo me. Thanks in advance for any info.

Escort SRX. Had to have it done at-er-BMW- dealer. Outside techs did it inside the BMW garage. It took most of the day and they did give me a loaner. Could not wait to get back in the GTO.

You can do it yourself. If the RD you picked has a straight cord, just tuck it up above the headliner and between the A pillar cover and windshield, then pull off the panel on the side of the dash and run the cord to the fuses, behind the panel under the dash. I posted some pics a back in Jan or Feb of my Escort if that is the one you picked.

Try these links (to threads on site started by ME :) ):

Completed Hardwiring Radar Detector

Hardwiring a Radar Detector (or other accessories)

The 1st link has a pretty good tutorial (I think) and a link to a small zip file containing pictures of how I routed the wiring. The beauty about the way I did it is it only took like 30 min (once I found the fuse panel with the help of my dealership) and can be easily removed (no permanent mods to the vehicle).

I also considered hardwiring a detector in my goat because the power outlet is too far from the dash. Then I got into thinking I switch from one vehicle to another so I just decided to buy this from eBay......

Has anyone with a passport 8500 hardlined their's yet. The SmartCord is the reason I'm asking...I was wondering about mounting the mute button...

I did. The pics I posted in January are gone. I guess to conserve space. I mounted the mute button on the cord in the bottom left of the instrument cluster. A little hard to get to, but I didn't want it to be conspicuous. I have it turned so the top is to the left. I almost put it where the group of little holes on the right side of the dash is, but was afraid I might not be able to cut out a hole to fit the button perfectly.
