Go to an automotive paint supply joint and have them photograph the part with their
paint matching camera , it works really great.I have it done a number of times
and have been really pleased with results .
G
lol, tried it once. did. not. work. they gave me a color that wasn't even close.

it needs someone who really knows what they're doing to custom mix it.

I tried that here and they said they needed an area of the color larger than I could provide to get a good shot with their analyzing machine. The thin strips of color on our interior pieces weren't large enough of an area to get a good read.
yeah, maybe that's why.

their "system" told them to mix some odd mercury color code. it ended up being some light blue color that wasn't even close.

My local guys said they need a sample that is relatively flat and at least 3"x3" or 4"x4".

Best I could do is compare a real piece against available color chips. That's how I arrived at Medium Quartz Metallic.
i mean, i admit, it's the closest i've seen.

i guess i've become picky in my old age, combined with a nostalgia of when these were new... i want it MIIIIIINT.

on that topic... was it a dodge color? i googled the name and it spit out a dodge color code.

i still prefer the SEM paint because it seems more durable than the automotive touchup basecolor i usually get. seems to scratch very easily... but that is just meant as a base color to be covered with clear, so i suppose it doesn't need to be durable.

Good find, how did you locate name/site? Curious if they’ll reveal anything

Any body shop that sprays Sikkens paint will have their spectrometer camera and can get the formula off an image of the console (it's not too small). Then it's just a matter of adjusting the gloss level of the satin clear to get a good match

so i take it you've actually done this with the trim then? because i have and their little camera didn't get anywhere close.

I do this daily with difficult colors all day long (I work at a body shop). I have not done this on my personal gto, as I painted that color Grey on my console gloss black instead.

If I can get a spare part in that color, I can have my painter work on the formula and share it with the community. The only issue is that it will be for the Sikkens paint line only, not for any other. It also means it must be sprayed by a body shop, with an hvlp gun and coated with semi gloss clear, neither of which would be out of a rattle can.

Maybe 4-6" long piece should suffice, doesn't matter if it's broken, but the paint quality needs to be good without UV damage
that's gonna be hard. a lot of these pieces fade, and it's been so long since these cars were new... the coating is :poop: in terms of wear resistance and doesn't hold up well to solvents, either. i feel sorry for anyone whose ever tried wiping them down with alcohol. (found that out while prepping for paint a few weeks ago on an old peice... so it didn't matter anyhow, but the coating just started wiping off like it was nothing.)

i'll keep an eye out, though.
