Hey guys, New to the forum here. Little back ground I have a 04 GTO. My key fob hasn’t been working properly sometimes it works sometimes it don’t. I think it finally gave out. Not sure if it’s a coincidence but I wasn’t able to lock my car when I got home left it alone brushed it off, came back after couple hrs tried to start it. But it wouldn’t stay on it would die after couple seconds. After so many Tries it finally kicked back on. The theft mode is activated (the red lock with car behind it)

What I’m asking is, if my key fob battery finally gave out, would it prevent my car from starting up and staying on?

Just had this problem. Your going to have to buy a new key fob because the transmitter in the fob has to be in working order to keep the car running. My car just did the same thing about a month ago. There is a guide on reprogramming the key fob on youtube once you get a new key fob.

I would recommend just buying a new fob as well. You can pry the key open and solder on a new battery if you want, and I've done this, but a brand new fob feels so much better. gmpartsonline has a new fob for 47 bucks, all you have to do is swap your key over (remove it by undoing the two screws) and programming the fob (look up "program GTO keyfob" on YouTube, super easy).

In 2018 my 2006 GTO Key Fob's button deteriorated. I went on Ebay and purchased an OEM Key Fob only (minus the blade). And I picked up some OEM screws just to have some new ones once I removed the blade from the old fob. Once again here are the directions for programming. Or used the YouTube video.

"Put your key into the ignition and turn it on without starting the car and leave it in the on position.
After 10 minutes the horn will honk 1x.
Turn the key off then back on within 5 seconds and leave it on for another 10 minutes witout starting the car.
After that 10 minutes passes the horn will honk 2x.
Do the same thing a third time and after 10 minutes the horn will honk 3x.
Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
Walk about 10 feet or so from the car and try all of the buttons to lock/unlock the doors and trunk.
Start your car to check that out and your done ... it's programmed to your car."

Gtog8ta sells a replacement fob, or if you go on ebay you can get the battery with the tabs for like 6 bucks, would just have to open your glued case.

The buttons went south on my spare fob, gtog8 has them for @7 bucks. After spending way to much time screwing around with it I just got a new one.
