I have a 2004 gto 6 speed unfortunately I hydrolocked my ls1
Was planning on going to the lq4 route or even 5.3 which ever I can get a deal On really
I know some holes will have to drilled out
I’m doing it on a budget and just trying to get it back on the road
Not really looking to build it or anything crazy right now
My question are:
1. Will it run ok without a tune?
2. Would the injectors and intake manifold be ok with either a 6.0 or 5.3
3. Anyone ever done a swap like this?
i still have many questions but I’ll start here
Thanks

I’m pretty sure my short block is toast
There is oil everywhere
I haven’t had a chance to inspect it but I know at the minimum I will need a short block
And I can’t find any out here in California
I’ve found a couple long blocks but man they are pricey
Just trying to go the cheaper route
To get it back on the road

I would at least get an LQ9 if you can, to keep the compression ratio up a little and make similar power.

Should run decent without a tune if you are otherwise stock, i would think. Makes similar hp/tq, and the stock tune runs fairly rich, so as long as you have no other mods you'll get away with it.

LQ9 has the same cam specs as the 04 GTO LS1, 317 heads are like 243's with bigger chambers. Makes a little more torque than the 04 LS1, but not a ton.

Make sure you run a MAF, stay out out the throttle when you can if you're worried about it, should be fine.

If your modded, i would probably spring for a tune.

So say I go with the lq9
Will my intake and headers pulleys etc switch over from my ls1?
Will my 6 speed trans bolt up fine?
Is there any years of the lq9 that won’t work?
Thanks for help by the way
I’ve been loosing my mind over this
Lol

Not sure what truck engines came with the "long crank" but stay away from those. You can tell from the thickness of the flange that bolts to the flexplate.

Other than that it should be largely plug and play. You'll need to transfer over the gto oil pan, and kfxguy has something about it in his thread. May have to drill an extra bolt hole in the pan.

Lq9's came in escalades, i believe. Anything that says vortec 6000 ho or something like that.

You could do an lq4 as well, but you would just be down on power.

Got mine from an 06 chevy express van. You want one with cam sensor in rear, 24x reluctor, knock sensors on top. Should run without a tune, but if you cam it it most likely wont run. I would recommend getting a tune for it.

Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction
I’m going to see if I can get an lq4 or lq9 in these next few weeks
How hard is it to remove the engine from the gto?
Does the trans have to come out?
Any tips or any problems I might run into?

it's not too hard to remove, but if i had to do it again, i'd drop the trans first. there have been guys that have done both at once, and angled it out of the top, but you have to have a fancy hoist for that.

The truck engines are a lot cheaper. You can also find a lq4/lq9 6.0 that will be a direct drop-in. Just needs minimal tuning to get it running good. They are heavy as hell tho haha

Drop the trans first 100p easier.

Why not just get another ls1? Engine swap and budget dont mix lol
Ya I know they don’t mix lol
But the thing is I can’t find any ls1 engines near me
They’re pretty far
I’ve seen a couple and man they want a lot for them
It would be awesome if I could find a complete shirt block but I can’t find that either

so little update guys
I got my hands on a low mileage ls1 longblock
I want to put a cam in it but I don’t wanna go too crazy
Any suggestions?
The engine is stock
Is it possible to put a cam in and not tune it for a little bit?

Not sure what too crazy is. They are all mild when it comes to small cubes.
get what every you want, if there isn’t an actual build direction.
You can drive on any of them for as long as you want. Drive ability is gonna be bad but you’d get by if it’s a stick car.
