My buddy came over for dinner and afterwards we decided to take my 2 cars out and try to get a couple runs in. He was driving my 2000 GTP sedan with 3.4" pulley, SLP cai, DHP v1.5 tuned, RT hi-flow cat, 180* stat, colder plugs, etc., etc. I was in my stock '06 a4 GTO with about 1100 miles on it. It was a little tougher than I thought it would be to get some clear road around here, so we were a little rushed on some of the runs. From about a 15 roll the GTP gets the hit and stayed almost even until the middle of second gear, then the goat started pulling and we shut down. From a dig, I launch the goat pretty clean and he spins a little in first, the goat murders him up to about 100. Not sure when he let off, I had a couple of busses on him when I shut down. We then switched cars and tried a couple more times. From a slow roll, the GTP hangs right there in first gear then slowly fades as the speed increases. He had 3 or 4 cars from 20 to 80 (?). We had one run from about 30 to 100 and the goat was walking away up top. He put about 4-5 cars at least on the GTP, but I might have gotten the jump on him. It's a little hard to draw a clear conclusion as to how much quicker the GTO is from all this because my friend isn't used to either car and we were really rushing our starts in between traffic spurts. The GTP can keep it respectable down low, but after that the goat walks it pretty hard. We both had fun though.:gears:

well...........

I had a '98 GTP w/ the following mods
http://www.brewcitymuscle.com/forum/vbpicgallery.php?do=view&g=229

and it hung side by side w/ my GTO when it was brand new, under 500 miles, stock, till around 100ish, then the GTO shifted into 4th, and proceded to walk my old GTP.

the GTP truely is a great stoplight racer, but after that the story ends for them, unless you start going crazy w/ the mods.

the super expensive stuff. for the GTP to win, I would have needed a different blower, or ported, bigger injectors, smaller pulley, or an intercooler w/ injectors & pulley, or heads, etc.

I had a 97 GTP all stock and had a horrible time racing it from a dig. Front wheel drive with that kinda power= massive wheel spin, never could get it to hook up right!

My brother has a 98 GTP with the usaul mods, pulley U-bend ect. and with all that power off the line he cant hook and can only pull off a 14.7 quarter spinning down the 60. now from a 10mph roll he will stay right on my door for quite a while. We havent taken it to 100 yet but for $6500 plus a few $$ to mod it that car is damn fast. Be aware of our pontiac cousin or he will bite you lol.

My wife's GTP is mean through first and second. Its turns into a slug after shifting to third. Of course it shifts to third somewhere around 85-90. Would like to mod it some just to piss off the GXP and Imp SS owners.

The GTP's can be great sleepers. I can't tell you how many imports (German & Japanese) that I've surprised in that thing. With my mods and assuming a good launch, I think it's potentially a high 13 sec. car. My buddy had a lot of praise for that car after we ran'em like we did. He was saying what a bargain that thing is and how surprised he was to see how fast it is in first gear.:turbonaug

I ran into a new Grand Prix GTP owner at Walmart a few weeks ago and I was shocked by what he said.

First off I was parked right next to him in my 06 GTO. He told me he liked my car and then went into a long speach about the Grand Prix.

He told me that the 303 hp Grand Prix runs dead even with the 400 HP GTO.
He went on and on about how fast it is. He had a bunch of reasons why the Grand Prix was just as fast as the GTO. I had to make an excuse to get away from him, because I couldn't take anymore of his B.S. and I was running late.

GTO4Now -- in my area w/ your mods your GTP would be a easy mid 13 sec. car. atl must have crappy air.

black05 - Ever since ONE PERSON somehow ran a 13.6 in a stock GXP (most are still low 14's) they claim they can hang with us, since the worst of the GTOs run that. well I'm pretty sure the best of us ran what around a 12.6-12.7?? guess we should talk shit to old Z06 owners.

Tires ! ! ! ! In a FWD car with any kind of torque, the only way to get the power down is with great tires.

My GTP would burn the tires off the car before it went anywhere if I was still running stock tires.

The only way I know to get a decent launch at the track is with DR's or Slicks.

My best 60' in my GTP has been a 1.81 on the way to a [email protected] 108.5 .....that was with M/T ET Streets 255/50/16 and a helluva good burnout to heat them up.

On Topic, I've made that exact same set of runs with a buddy driving my GTP and he could hang at my GTO's door all the way to 110.......with me in the GTP and him in the GTO, the GTP would pull a car on the launch and hold it to over 100 then the GTO will slowly start to pull.

Nowadays, my GTP is quite a bit faster than my GTO and will keep walking away albeit slowly.

Whenever I get these comments I smile and say "You've got a cute little car there" with some amount of enthusiasm and walk off. I use "sensible" if it's a Honda or Toyota. ;)

Disclaimer: The wife drives a 2000 GTP and I love driving it.

I think a GXP might be able to hang for a few seconds at certain speeds, but not for to long with a LS2 GTO. You should have invited him out for a test on his theory.:gears:

Mid 13's? Really? Well, it is hot and humid here most of the spring and summer so...I have roll raced some cars that are supposed to do high to mid 13's and kept up or slightly pulled a few of them. :turbonaug

Best time I've seen for a stock GTO is 12.9.:patriot:

I use to have a 2000 Grand prix, and it ran a best of 13.4 that's with a cat delete, old DHP PCM, 3.25 pulley, 1.9:1 rockers, 160 thermo, SLP CAI, and drag radials.

And that was considered to be very lighly modded heh. The cars can run all day, and if you see one at the drag strip you never know what he could be running, 14-12's is pretty common on the modded ones, and naturally they have the ones running 11-9's.

I loved my Regal GS and GTP, but now don't want to go back.

1.9 rockers/PEMS and usual mods got my GS 13.2 at 104
XP cam and headers got my GTP a little faster (never took it to the drags)

I modded my brother's Regal LS with the first ZZP SSM90 kit this year, and it keeps up with the GTO on hot days (when I had an issue with heat soaked IAT's). I had actually lost in a 1/4 mile race at NYIRP once until I let the Goat cool and beat him by only 3 tenths.

All great cars, but the GTP and GS became unreliable when modded to hang with my stock GTO. I only have the LS1 ;) , but it still trapped respectable at 104 completely stock and without any track prep. I should run it in the colder September days now.

Well, I don't know about your little comment there. I love my GTO. But those GXPs are hot $hit with the right driver behind the wheel. Two weeks ago at KCIR (hot and humid), I ran my PB of 13.50 at 103 (stock '05 GTO) and my buddy with a lightly modded GXP ran a 13.42 at 104. He's been racing a while, but those cars have what it takes to get the power to the ground. Don't be so quick to discount their claims.
