Im not sure if this is normal or not and since this is my first stick car I figured i'd ask.

Sometimes when I let off the clutch in first gear, I get a grinding like noise from I believe the tranny. It almost sounds like its draging. It doesnt seem to happen all the time but it happens quite often. Today I was talking to someone and was about 20 feet from a stop sign with a wall about 10 feet long on the side and I heard the noise until the wall ended. Is it normal or is something not right?

Something is not right... Take off the skip-shift eliminator (if you have one) and take it in.
Dont have one, just a catback.

Can be normal if your RPMs are too low and you let the clutch all the way out while giving low throttle. (It’s typical to some manual trannies, the throwout or pilot bearing making noise I believe). Have had it happen a few times on this car when first getting familiar with this particular tranny. Try letting the clutch out a little more slowly and/or give it more gas while letting out the clutch and see if it still does it. If it always makes the sound regardless of clutch/throttle technique, then you definitely have a problem.

mine whines like a banshee at idling speeds. has ever since it was new, with 26 mi on it. chock it up to (imho) the best darn six speed ever to drive off a dealer lot, the tremec t56. i've taken it through the ringer, and it works great. if you're super worried about it, take it in, but its just the gears meshing. if you lug it and hit the clutch it will make a funny noise too..

Same thing happened to me, but the sound came from the diff side. I took it to the dealer for about 8 months, they told me its O.K. But today the dealer is changing the whole rearend and its costing them almost 3k to change. I guess GM will never learn, they wait when every thing goes realy bad

T56's are noisy, all my friends with F cars have the same noise/clunking...the only one who doesn't had it rebuilt (but then again I can't hear anything over his 13-1 cr 396 LT1 :p )

Yup, manuals make all kinds of noises. most are normal, some are bad, watch out for burning clutch smell.

And let your tranny/clutch get up to operating temps before attempting any kind of burnout or you'll discover firsthand cold clutch glazing.:burnout:

There are a lot of posts about this. I don't want to believe that something so embarassing is suppoesed to be normal. There has to be some solution. It seems like all of these threads refer to the same problem.

Still searching...
I get that too but thats not what im talking about. I get a grinding like noise once and a while when I let off the clutch and im under about 10 MPH. I realize that it also does it when im in first gear, slow down under 10 MPH and then accelerate again. Im just going to keep driving it and see what happens. I havent really heard it much in the past few days.

Gotcha. There are a bunch of threads floating around regarding similar problems all revolving around the drivetrain. It's kind of a bummer.

Even though my drivetrain lash seems to be getting worse with mileage, I still feel lucky that nothing is "grinding."

I read a lot of posts where people have grinding sounds coming from various areas. There is a big difference between the driveshafts bouncing around (which may be what I have), the diff whining (which you will hear from any tight set of gears), and grinding noises.

I think if it is grinding that you are hearing, you have more of a problem than most others. I agree with speeddemon and Jontall. It sounds like that beast needs to go in the shop.

my 6 speed trans makes the same noise under 10 mph so does my nv-3500 in my 98 s10. Manual gearboxes are noise makers at low speeds. Don't worry about it unless it is really loud or feels funny.
Thanks. The new vette does the same thing so im not too worried about it.
