Ordering the rest of the junk I need to get the gto ready for the great voyage.

Anyone know what size the bolt is that clamps the steering shaft coupler to the steering rack pinion?

i wonder if it really matters that it has that weird looking flute between the threads and the head of the bolt. i've always thought that it needed it to kind of grab onto the notch on the pinion end of the rack, but maybe a regular nut and bolt will work just fine, or a bolt with a sleeve or something.

The bolt acts as a “key” between the knuckle and the shaft on the rack to lock it in position, which also allows you to tighten and remove the nut without having to struggle to hold the bolt head. A regular bolt may work though if you can wrestle with it.

I wonder...

If you could get the proper size and grade bolt, grind the head down, and then get a threaded coupler, grind that to shape so that it would serve the same function as the interesting looking flute part of the oem bolt, thread it on, insert bolt into said coupler and tack weld it, and then use find a prevailing torque nut for the end...

Hmmn.
