Stroker windage tray issues?

600 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Weldermike27408
So my engine builder is finishing up the TSP 403 stroker for my GTO and called to say they’re running into issues with the windage tray. They’d told me previously that they knew they were going to have to space it down but they’re saying in order for it to clear the rods they had to space it down to the point it hits the oil lines inside the GTO pan? I’d mentioned I’d seen on here that sometimes people had to use less spacers and “clearance” with a ball peen hammer but they didn’t think it was going to help much. Anyone on here have any advice on how to proceed? I’m going to go see the motor in person tomorrow so they can show me but I’d like to have some tribal knowledge to back me up before I tell an engine builder of 40 years how to do their job.

An engine builder of 40 years has never built a stroker LS?

He knew he was going to have to space the windage tray to clear the rods but apparently wasn’t expecting to have to space it so much that the oil pan doesn’t fit on the engine right anymore. He suggested just running it without the windage tray but I’d rather not.
I don’t recommend running without a windage tray. Crank scrapers are two different things and the best engine builders I know do not recommend a crank scraper and no windage tray. Space the windage tray with a couple washers and dimple where needed if you have to. You will need to massage the pickup tube after spacing the windage tray. If you space it to much and place the pickup wrong it will interfere with the oil pan fitting. Space it only what you need to then dimple it. Some rods may interfere with the side of the pan or block also so make sure that isn’t happening as well and clearance if necessary.

Hit up improved racing. They make aftermarket windage trays for strokers. Don't use a scraper and definitely don't run without a windage tray.
Sounds like a ford shop to me. I'd take the block and bounce.

Well the motor is already finished so I can't exactly grab the block and run. I did end up ordering an Improved Racing tray though, I already have their oil pan baffle and they definitely make a good product. This shop has been decent to work with though, I just don't think they've done much in the way of front sump oil pans like in our GTOs.
So I ran both a improved racing crank scraper and baffle the crank scraper took a lot of trimming with a Callie’s ultra billet 4.00 stroke crank.
I forgot to update this thread. The Improved racing stroker windage tray worked perfect for my TSP stroker. Didn’t require any trimming whatsoever.
