I know someone who has a set of used Sumitomo tires. They are 265 35 18 HTR ZIIIs or Z IVs, I'll have to check. Are these tires any good? I mean they look Ok, but thats nothing. How are they on a dig, or at high speed such as shaking and vibs, and do they handle well??

Any help or experiences you have had with these tires, is appreciated. The tires need not have been on a GTO, but on any sporty car. Thanks.

Not those specifically, but I had a set of ZII’s back in 2007 on the 06 I bought. Complete garbage tires that I replaced immediately. Won’t consider that brand ever again due to my experience with the ZII’s.

Terrible traction for a 400hp RWD V8 car, and were noisy.

The dealership put them on the car as cheap new tires and boy was that true. The III’s were just a newer model of the II’s I had, but most likely are still similar.

Food for thought here:
I’d strongly encourage you to not buy used tires from someone unless you know how they were driven. Too many unknowns for me to ever consider putting used tires on one of my vehicles.

Not using used tires goes without saying. But, I thought I would give you a little back ground so you would know how I came to consider Sumitomo Z IIIs. I suppose they're not worth the cost of mounting and balancing the tires either. My friend was going to give them to me. They came off his Bimmer. And I thank you for the input.

Hey Popeye. You're not going to believe this. I was talking to the friend who gave me the tires today. I said to him, the word is these tires have bad traction. He said they were OK on his Bimmer and what do you have to lose, you're driving on two corded BFGs. I started laughing and said you're right. He offered to take them to a changer. So, I took the rears off the Goat and had them mounted and balanced.

When I drove it today I thought not bad, meaning the vibs, shaking, and noise was gone. It was shake, rattle and roll with the corded BFGs. These will fill a gap until I get some good rubber in the spring, such as some 4Ss. BTW, they did vibrate at first but then we swapped sides and the vibes stopped.

I had HTR Z3s on my car, I would STRONGLY recommend against them if you drive in anything but warm dry weather.

I autocrossed on them a bit, in hot dry they were amazing.... Snap oversteer and spun it on wet road, went to a Pilot SuperSport
I agree with the comments about these tires. But, you must reread how I came to put these on my car. I did not buy these tires new. They were given to me, they are used, and they replaced two corded BFGs. It is not my intention to use these tires as a permanent replacement.

They hold air, have half their tread, and the Goat is now in storage for the winter. I am looking at 4Ss in the spring. But, thanks for taking the time to provide insight on these tires. Its helpful and I asked for opinions.

I think your initial post is a bit misleading and your priorities were a bit misplaced. Questions about how the tires handle, ride, and hook are irrelevant when you are currently rolling on tires showing cords. The answer to your question is "non-corded tires will always handle and ride better than corded tires." The tires were free and actually had life left on the treads, and that is all that matters if you can't afford to buy new tires immediately.

Oh really, I didn't know that about corded tires. So, the next time tell me something I don't know. Christ!

I mean, you started the thread asking for opinions on specific tires while leaving out the tidbit about your current tires showing cords, which indicates to me that you were being rather picky about free tires.

But I'll be sure to remain silent the next time you are looking for assistance.

Ok fair enough. But I was inquiring as to the abilities of Sumitomo tires. If you have any experience with them please post up. I didn't think the discussion concerned my old corded BFGs. They were mentioned only as the reason I would put the Sumitomos on temporarily. Have a good day.

Have an appointment tomorrow for new 555s Gen 2 on the rear. I have BFGs on the front but cannot get a matching pair for the rear. That includes the A/Ss. The Sumos my friend gave last year held air all winter and will get me to the tire shop. I don't like mixing different tire models much less brands, but I have no choice.

The Gen 2 are new models. If they suck, the shop will allow me to trade up to SC3s. I'll keep you posted.
