using steering wheel radio controls for other things

2016 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  TLS_MuthaFuggin_Addict
so im getting my gto back in a couple days. I had full exhaust and some other things installed along with a tune and exhaust cutouts. they're installing the qtp remote kit.

so my situation. the remote has 2 buttons. 1 that you hold for open (hold it until you like the sound or until its full open) and the other is to close it (hold until you like the sound or until its fully closed). I don't wanna carry a remote around with me since for some reason GM decided to make our keys the size of something you would play with as a toddler, and I don't want to just leave in the car and hafta look for it when I need it. so I think I might have a solution....with your help that is.

my question. since my steering controls don't work for the radio anymore since I installed the aftermarket radio, I figured id use the volume buttons. I mean what better way to make your car louder than by using the volume up button. does anyone know of or have a diagram of the steering wheel controls so I know what wires I would want to use??

I looked up online something similar. people were hooking up button switches to garage door openers. basically the most forward I found was a guy that found the 2 connection points inside the remote, soldered 2 wires to the connection and just ran it to a 2 pole switch. so it was kind of a remote switch. I want to do the same I guess. add 2 wires to each button (4 in total) and basically just run them to the respective wires for the volume controls.

any help

It depends how good you are with electronics. There’s not a lot of room in the wheel to hide extra stuff, and even if there was you still have to deal with twisting wires so it is easiest to hyjack control after the clock spring.

I have mine hooked up to an arduino, sending 5v across the two wires and measuring the voltage drop with a known resistor to tell what button is pressed. Mine still controls the factory radio too with a digital potentiometer, but to could skip that part. In my set up the buttons control the radio on a short press but a relay on long holds.

Extra buttons are useful.

Is it really that much of a hassle to just leave a small remote in your center console? I'd much rather just leave it in the car and spend the 2 seconds needed to grab it out of the console, than try to deal with hacking into the cars wiring in hopes that you can get it to work that way.

how about one of the awesome Kindig switches, installed on the side of console. btw, as I am sure you know, you can get a simple adaptor for your aftermarket audio to work with the steering wheel controls:

Those “Kindig” switches are like 10 bucks or less on eBay from China.

Priceless

you have cutouts connected to an Arduino?? if so how'd you manage that? can I see the setup if you have a chance??

but wheres the fun in that?? I can have buttons that literally turn the volume of the car up and down.... tell me you wouldn't want that and/or think it would be awesome. scenario... guy walks up to you and you start talking about your cars and you start your gto and this guy is like "oh man I like the exhaust but its a little too quiet for me" your response "I got you, let me just turn my car up" guy is watching and you actually turn up the loudness via volume buttons on your steering wheel.

yea I have one but ive gotten used to not using the steering wheel controls for the radio. I never even used them when I had the stock radio in
I think photo bucket took a shit on some of links, but I have my Arduino hooked up to my radar setup. It’s all the same, just find the right relay for your cutouts to match your switch.

It's endless what can be done. My 05:

remote arm/disarm aftermarket alarm
remote start
remote vent windows in four positions
remote roll windows down/up
remote pop trunk
remote pop gas door
remote open electric cutouts
remote close electric cutouts
remote rev engine

All from the same Viper remote for the alarm system.

Changed the oil in the Viper 16 months and 1500 miles and it was still golden. Not a single bit of metal on the magnetic plug. Though she did burn about 3/4 of a quart. Normal when you use gears to slow you vs the brakes.
