it is not usually the pump itself that leaks. it is mostly the gaskets at the block. we do a lot of them on the gmc's and chevy trucks. they did change the gaskets also.

The WP on the LT1 has to be the worst of all GM V8's. Not only do you get to replace the WP when the bushing begins to leak, but half the time you get the priviledge of changing the optispark, too!
Hahaha! I hear ya there on the LT1. I still have my LT1 Trans Am and doing a STS turbo on in this month with a new Crate motor running 15psi. People finding any luck with the Meizere water pump? The are pricy but seems people are happy with them.

I had a 95 Transam with a Lt1. I changed the oil one day cranked the motor up, when I shut it off antifreze was just pouring out if the water pump. No warning or sign it was going bad. When I called the dealer they told me it was 200 for a new one. Ended up getting it from advanced auto parts, the only parts chain to carry it at the time for a 100 dollars.

16K on the odometer....my water pump just crapped out...

I almost pee in my pants when the temp gauge went from middle to red in 3 seconds...

getting fixed as we speak...

yea i had a 96 WS-6 T/A and i had the head gasket blow at 110,000 miles so me and my brother. put a new optispark ,water pump, and some other stuff
then a month later i got the Goat 16,000 miles and no problems yet.

2 pumps go bad so they are crap. Give me a break.

+1 the sky is falling the sky is falling:drink:

27K on my stock pump and she's going back on....

my bud has an 00 z28 with 80k,original oil pump and water pump not a single problem

30k miles and i've never smelled coolant or seen my temp gauge go past 3/8 (i know its pretty inaccurate, but if it was running hot..i'm sure it would do something, lol)

100k, still on stock pump

36k miles on my '98 T/A when I traded it - original WP.
64k miles on my '99 Z28 when I traded it - original WP (even after 2 removals for cam swaps).
11k miles on my '06 GTO - no sign of WP failure yet.

I suspect the vast majority of LSx WPs will last many thousands of miles... ;)

Hey guys! I want the GTO community to know that the LS2 waterpump is a poor design. Smell coolant and looked under the hood. Pump is bad. Be aware of this problem on all LS2 cars. I know of a C6 Corvette that had the same problem after only 18,000 miles. Ugh! Sorry to break the news. Two cars in the same neighborhood is not great odds. Somebody needs to send a not to GM and get a RECALL on this part. Maybe that is why GM is changing to a 6.2 liter quickly.
Ive yet to see a single LS2, or 01+ for that matter, water pump go bad... we require replacement on 99 and older just because of age and the problems they had, but generally its the thermostat that goes bad in the pumps.

Put the Wynns/Gunk 8oz can of water pump lube in there. The 95/5 soluble oil is compatible, and will help your water pump tremendously.

I got a flat a couple of weeks ago. All tires are crap. Or maybe it was the air I put in it. OK, all air is crap.

speak shit and then ask questions...nice...tool... If GM wants to raise their brand satisfaction maybe they need to raise their buyers IQ

ls1 water pump part# 89017456

ls2 water pump part# 89018053

according to local dealer, thats the part number for it, but gmpartsdirect shows a pump kit for the ls2.

anybody know if the pumps between the ls1's and ls2's are different?
the block footprint is almost identical so i would :quoties:assume:quoties: they are the similar, they certainly look it.

Mine looks like it just failed 47k miles. It doesn't leak until the car warms up and then I get a continuous drip from the front of the motor right where the clamshell plate ends at the front. Maybe drops a 1/4 cup in 10-15 minutes. In the old days, the pumps had a weep hole where if the pump failed, it would leak a little from the hole and it pretty much gave you the warning you needed to get it fixed before you got stuck. In my old cars, running them at high speeds near redline and frequent hard downshifts on the highway would kill the pumps, and the fan clutch quick. I drive this car pretty hard and I do the 4 to 3 downshift pretty regularly passing on the highway. I just thought they would build them better then cars from 30 years ago.

If you're gonna change the WP, you might as well change the cam while the pump is off. Since you're removing the crank pulley for the cam change, it makes good sense to install an under drive pulley. Installing new valve springs and push rods puts you well on the path to installing better heads. Finish the job with a new Mezeire electric pump and your problem is solved...no more pesky leak. :judge:

110K+ on my 98 WS6, no issues. Changed coolant 3 times though.
