check oil light... "sigh"...

So on Thursday I started up the GTO and got about 2 miles from my house and the check oil message popped up on the dash. I shut off the engine and pulled over and checked the oil. Oil level maybe about half a quart low and it looks a little dirty (time for a change anyway). While the hood was open started the car again and the check oil message came back up and now I have a tapping somewhere in the valvetrain. Best conclusion I can come up with it that the oil pump failed. The car has 37K miles on it bone stock down to the air filter. Thoughts opinions?

Roll off is picking it up on Tuesday and taking it down to my mechanic.

Edit: The tapping noise wasn't there the previous time I drove it. Didn't hear anything unusual when I started it either.

Drove it to low on oil and spun a bearing.

LS2's have to be checked:

- Before operation
- During operation
- After operation

...daily.

Its really not that loud like a spun bearing but its definitely there. Just a bit louder than the sewing machine sound the LS engines make. Cant really hear it once you get maybe 4 or 5 feet from the car. Could be a bearing though, I really have no idea.

Not my car but the same message.

If you see an oil light, it is a pressure warning. Best case scenario usually is a failing sender. It is why I added a gauge.
I thought about a bad sensor but its the tapping I hear now that wasn't there before that is making me think mechanical.

Guess I'll find out when it's torn into and see whats going on. Just wondering what you guys thought so I can be on the look out for anything or steer myself in the right direction.

I had that come on and did not know why. It turns out that is the reminder to change your oil. I reset the reminder and was fine. I then added a gauge for piece of mind.

I am pretty sure the check oil light is the lifecycle light that needs reset....

Try the reset and if the light goes away you are fine....

There is one light that requires a special reader to check whats wrong... mine wasn't that light you have and I needed to change the oil pressure switch as it was failing....

I dont think that's right..I had a display come up that said "Service Engine Oil"..I had put the oil change off for a few miles and it came up with that..I changed my oil and reset it and no more "Service Engine Oil" came up on the dash

"Check Oil" I would believe is definitely a different warning

Good Luck and Keep us posted hopefully it isnt too bad

Anyone have an owners manual?

p.s. tapping is not good after an oil warning. I'd have had it towed right away, turning it on and listening probably made it worse.

Yea I know your right. Oh well it is what it is I guess. I'll find out in the next couple days what it is. Roll off dropped it off at the mechanics shop today. I'll keep posted what wrong.

check your gmvis report. my 06 still has a powertrain warranty till December or 100k miles whichever comes first. yours may aswell.

My "Check Oil" comes up every now and then. My issue is the sensor though. Friends HPTuners said that I was running 125psi at idle which is not correct. Might want to check the sensor first. It could be cheap fix.

Just had "Service Engine Oil" warning. Oil level is good though, anyone know what this is for? Bad sensor?
Comes on at start up, but turns off if you push "Mode" button.

Service Engine Oil is an oil change reminder, Check Engine Oil with a little light means there is a potential serious problem. It helps to know the difference.

Thanks, I wish the best for op

I will never understand how any car company can offer a performance model, or any model really, w/o an oil pressure gauge. Just inviting disaster, and once the light comes on it's usually too late, and then the engine noises start.

That's the 1st thing I add to a new hot rod. Hopefully U don't have the dreaded "rod knock" when U let off the accelerator @ 30-40 MPH. When I hear that one, it's "Oh Sh*t" time.

Need to hook a mechanical gauge to verify oil pressure.
Pull the filter, cut it open, and see what it looks like inside.
