I too am interested, I have the same issue forming on mine. I usually just scrub at it with some armor all on a terry cloth and it's good for a while.

Adams VRT works great on keeping mine nice.

 

They are metal. If you want to go all out take it to a body shop and have them painted satin black. That's going to be the only way they will stay black. :/

Molding Replacement - Roof Weld Joint Reveal
Removal Procedure
Use tape to protect the mounting surface during removal.

To remove the weld joint molding (1) from the roof, begin at the front end and use a small plastic flat-bladed tool. Lift the weld joint molding (1) away from the weld joint, disengaging the 6 retainer clips (2).
Slide the weld joint molding (1) from the rear window side molding retainer (3) and remove.
Installation Procedure

Seat the 6 retainers onto the weld joint molding, evenly spaced.
Engage the weld joint molding (2) onto the rear window side molding retainer and slide along until the weld joint molding (1) sits under the uncap (1).
Seat the weld joint molding (2) in the weld joint and beginning at the rear, clip it in place.
At the front, ensure the weld joint molding (2) is installed under the windshield molding cover.
Remove the protective tape from the vehicle.

These retainers are very easy to break so buy new ones to be prepaired: GM part # 92138234

 

You'll likely break a few of those clips on removal. You can get replacements at the dealer for crazy $$$. The metal is thin so be careful with flexing so it doesn't get kinked.

Mine is ok, I'm having a problem with the rubbery moldings that go around the quarter windows. They look like they're flaking and getting dull

 

A good plastics spray will take care of most of that unless you have layers that are already peeling. Shoot me a PM and I'll hook you up with our newest formula.

I think if you were to prep the roof rails very carefully and masked the body from over-spray, you could do it with Duplicolor satin black in a spray can. (The masking tape can be slipped under the molding.)

I would not recommend doing that at all. It will just create more issues with corrosion later on.

Perhaps, but it looks like it started underneath, so if I simply spray the top, I
think it will just come back in short order.

Thanks to JonTall I got it off today. Harder than those instructions let on. So far I only got my drivers side off and I didn't break any of the clips. The reason I took mine off though was because where it rides over the rear window is was lose. Come to find out my "rear window side molding retainer," or number 3 in the first picture has kind of dry rotted and come loose. Nothing a little window weld can't fix though.

Here's some tips. Wedge your pry tool of choice into the molding from the roof side. If a clip doesn't pop off where you are prying slide the tool to a different position. Protect your paint! One will give out and let you get your fingers in there and lift. But be careful as it's really thin metal. Don't expect the clips to be evenly spaced as they can slide around as they please. Once the clips are off, slide the molding towards the front of the car to slide it off the rear window retainer. Also check that rear window retainer for any damage while you're in there and clean out all the crap in there.
