Has anyone had this happen to them? I was driving around 10 mph over railroad tracks, and I hear a huge clank and rattling under the car. I immediately stop, get out and in front of the car on the ground is the skid plate! I couldn't believe it. A brand new car has plates of iron falling off of it? I only found three bolts too. I'm hoping nothing else was screwed up under the car because of it. I can only imagine what would have happened if this had been on the highway at 65 mph.

Best part is, today was my last day of vacation. THis couldn't have happened when I had a few days off to get it fixed? Now I'm going to have to figure out a time to bring the damn car in, because God knows no dealership service department can be open on a Saturday...

Did you hae the oil changed? Maybe it wasn't just tightened down from the factory. My friends 96 regal had a strange clunk that was from a brace not beeing tight from the factory...

Yeah, if they weren't tightened down they could have shaken out.

You'd think they'd come out one at a time though, and that you would have heard it rattling before it fell out.

Sorry to hear about this mishap. Has anyone ever changed the oil? There could be the culprit. By the way, my dealership is opned on Saturday, seems to be spreading for the dealerships to open for Saturday business.

I had the quality service professionals at Jiffy Lube change my oil. One the way to so cal to do my cam swap I started to get this strange rattle. The arse holes forgot to put two of the bolts back in. One more reason to change your own oil. Besides the $80 they charge you for a full synthetic

Someone definitely dropped the ball there. If the bolts were tightened, they won't vibrate out by themselves.

BTW, I work every Saturday 8-5...drive here to KC and I'll work on your car on Saturdays :turbonaug

Well now you don't have to take it off. Mine never came with one from the dealer....

A car that is one month old, take it to the dealer, unless it was something that you did. Have them make sure it is installed properly. Sure you could do it yourself, but have them inspect everything, incase there are other related issues.

Here in Phoenix there is a VW service department open until midnight!!!!!! Man that would make things so more convenient.

Thats a weird story. I don't see how it could come off even if the bolts are partially threaded on.

Only thing i can think is 1) It was off for something and was never reinstalled really. Maybe put up and the bolts threaded only a few times to let it hang so the guy could find a wrench. Then they never got wrenched.

2) Crossthreaded or stripped bolts ? I don't know if you can even do that to those grade bolts but maybe some pneumatic tool gun slinger went to town.

Not to hijack the thread, but is there a reason for the skid plate (besides the obvious)? Like, are these cars particularly susceptible to undercarriage damage compared to an F-body or something? I had two F-bodies, and neither of them had a skidplate...

On the roads in my area i would not go without it. There is always the chance rock or other crap could hit that area and damage the oil pan or the oil filter. I know the odds are unlikely, but i'll stick with it. I don't like the BMR one because of the holes in its design. I have had oil filters with rock damage so i know it can happen, just a rarety.
